Holderread, a 1993 graduate of John Glenn High School, Walkerton, is currently halfway through a six month deployment to the Mediterranean, Adriatic and Red Seas aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise. Holderread is one of 5,200 Sailors and Marines aboard the carrier who have traveled more than 15,000 miles since departing their homeport of Norfolk, VA. Holderread has operated in the Mediterranean and Adriatic seas in support of NATO-peace efforts, The carrier and its airwing recently transited south through the Suez Canal and into the Red Sea to provide support in the Persian Gulf Region. Aircraft from Holderread’s ship have flown 350 missions over Bosnia to support NATO ground forces. In July, USS Enterprise, the world’s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, made history with their 300,000 aircraft landing. They are currently flying missions to enforce the no-fly zone in Iraq. Aircraft carriers like Holderread’s ship are forward deployed around the world to maintain a U.S. presence and provide rapid response in times of crisis. They serve as a highly visible deterrent to would-be aggressors and, if deterrence fails, offer the most versatile and powerful weapons systems available. The USS Enterprise Battle Group includes more than 13,000 Sailors and Marines, eight tactical aircraft squadrons and nine additional ships and submarines armed with Tomahawk cruise missiles. So far during the deployment Holderread has visited France, Greece, Israel and Spain. In August, while off the coast of Israel, the warship was visited by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Holderread joined the Navy in July of 1993. It is one of the beautiful compensations of this life that no one can sincerely try to help another without helping himself.
