I VOICE OF THE PEOPLE
Dear Mrs. Nedra Williams, After reading your article in the September 19 issue of the Independent News, I now pose this query, if the devil himself were invited to North Liberty to set up shop would we be obligated to politely hear him out? Or would it be okay to just send him to Walkerton where the folks are more gracious and open minded? Sincerely Wondering, Robin L. Browne As a resident of North Liberty I am proud to be here. I wouldn’t want that to change because of Pokagans Casino plans. I am glad that the vote did not pass. This town needs its new churches, and Christian school. This is the influence I would rather pass on to my kids than a casino. Lets come together as we did at the information meeting to stand up for a better town! Jackie Keiser A CONCERNED PARENT Being a parent of a John Glenn freshman football player, I am concerned that our boys are not getting the credit they deserve. For starters, there were no cheerleaders to cheer our boys on. After a lot of complaints and grumbling, the girls finally got the “OK” to cheer. Thanks girls! What about the news publicity. Last weeks Independent News had girls volleyball, JV football, varsity football and even Urey

7th and Bth grade football. Where is the freshman football news? I know that the freshman football news is in the Plymouth Pilot or the LaPorte paper. But I and many other parents live right here in Walkerton and buy the Walkerton paper. What about the wooden footballs that, as I was told, only the JV and varsity players get. But some of the 9th graders do have them. My son being a freshman has played in one JV game and does dress for all varsity games. He does not play but is there “supporting the team.” Does this not mean he and all the other freshman players are not part of the “varsity team?” This is the first freshman football team so come on coaches and give our boys the publicity and credit they deserve. You are doing a great job coaching them. THE GREAT PUMPKIN FESTIVAL I do mean the Great Pumpkin Festival of Walkerton, Indiana, running October 4th, sth, 6th. Julie and her Jaunty Band have really done a great job in the planning and setting up of this annual event. There will be many activities for all to take part. Businesses and organizations will be vieing for every ones attention. There is going to be a parade on Saturday. Lots of food booths and a carnival. What more could we ask for an event. St. Pat’s
will be hosting activities at this same time in conjunction with the Great Pumpkin Festival. It sounds like a fun time all the way around. I think that John Glenn School Corporation is very lucky and fortunate to have a Superintendent like Dave McKee. A school corporation is like a large business. The board of directors hire a qualified person for a C.E.O, and then should let this person do what is necessary to have a smooth running operation, for the betterment of all. Axes to grind and past grievences are not the best way for either a school or business to be run. The board should stand behind the working head one hundred percent. I feel that the present board has been very lax in getting all their facts straight and not listening to reccomendations that have been given by the study groups on the growth and needed facilities for the school corporation. We all need to act like adults are supposed to act and use our minds in a sensible way. See you at the Festival. Sincerely Nedra Williams CASINO I was born and raised in North Liberty and I’ve seen this happen all the time. The people never agreeing to any changes or improvements. I’m surprised the town and kids turned out as good as they have. No new factories, could of had a theatre, no skating rink, no Potato Creek Festival anymore — no changes ever. This is the year for change — This poor town needs jobs, 12-
1500 casino - pay of 25 to 27,000. Stop and think what your loosing! As for the Christian people, life is full of temptations. If you faith is real and strong, you don’t have to go to the casino. But I think it would be wiser to give the money here rather than travel to Michigan City, Gary or Joliet. God knows what your doing where ever you do it. But the poor little town needs more revenue and the people more income. Think people! The bars are there and you don’t go. Yes For Casino!
