To Casino on Wednesday, Sept. 11, at 7 p.m., at the North Liberty Community Building for all residents to have an opportunity to voice their opinion on a gambling casino coming to town. It was estimated that around 200 persons were in attendance. On hand at this open forum meeting were Brian Moulton, director of Indian gambling development for Harrah’s Casinos and Mike Wesaw, Pokagon Indian financial director and tribal council representative.
Moulton stated that the Pokagon Band’s proposed 60-80 million dollar casino project with forecasts of between 150-170 million dollars in revenues per year, is seeking a site in the northern Indiana and Michigan area, but have not selected a site at this time. The project would provide jobs for 1,200 to 1,500 people with 90 percent of these employees to be from the local area in which the casino would be built. The Indians also stressed using local suppliers as well as contractors for the project. After hearing from numerous county residents on the effects on the small community — such as the possibility of increased crime, land value, on the town’s infrastructure and the social costs of gambling

— the Town Council voted 5-0 against a casino coming into the Town of North Liberty. This meeting was prompted by area businessmen who had first approached the Pokagon Indians and Harrah’s representatives on the possibility of North Liberty as being on the site selection list.
