Approval Voiced For Class Sports . System In Indiana Indiana schools voted on Monday, Sept. 16, 220-157 in favor of class sports for the 1997-98 school year. This proposal was originally approved last April when 233 principals endorsed the system to 151 that opposed. The Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) board approved the multiclass proposal 12-5 last spring but opponents sought signatures of at least 20 principals in each of the state’s five districts to force the statewide referendum vote that was held on Monday. IHSAA commissioner, Bob Gardner, announced the results of the vote during a news conference on Tuesday, Sept. 17 stating that this is a grassroot decision. The amendment calls for the state’s 385 member schools to be divided into four classes in baseball, basketball and volleyball for the 1997-98 school year. Softball will be split into three classes and soccer will remain in one class until more schools participate. By spring it is hoped that IHSAA committees will have settled on the details of such important issues as tournament sites, schedules, cost estimates and other logistical information of the new structure. The IHSAA board will re-evaluate the class sports systems after two years. North Liberty Chamber To Meet Tues., Sept. 24 ; The third quarter general meeting of the North LiberI ty Area Chamber of Commerce will be held, on Tuesday, Sept. 24, at 7:00 , p.m., at the North Liberty Community Building, 300 S. Main St. All Chamber members are encouraged to attend and the general public is also welcome. Topic of the evening will be a festival in North Liberty. Since the Potato Creek Festival was cancelled this summer, the Chamber feels it is important to begin exploring all options for a festival. These options might include, but are not limited to: continuing Potato Creek Festival as it was, combining the Potato Creek Festival with the 4th of July celebration, beginning an entirely new festival or eliminating the festival. Whatever conclusions are drawn, the community needs to begin the planning and organizing for such an event as soon as possible. Bring in your ideas, constructive comments and plenty of volunteers to help with such a project. As a surprise for the evening the Chamber board of directors is asking everyone to bring a can with them. It can be tin or aluminum, full or empty (no beer cans, please!) Curious?
