The Walkerton Friends Os The 4th IN TROUBLE I’m in trouble again, I haven’t written for awhile and I keep hearing about it. If I write I keep being told to shut up. It has been a busy time. I have 75 quarts of beans canned and about 50 quarts of tomatoes. Roy has put down two crocks of pickles. This is his first time at' doing something like this. He keeps bringing in one of his salty pickles for me to try. So far they seem to be working okay. This has certainly been a bountiful year with good garden crops and outstanding crops of mosquitoes and flies. Speaking of abundance, have you been to the farm fresh market at Urey Park? Every Saturday morning, starting at 7 a.m., there is a farm fresh market held with good produce for sale. Come on and look it
over and buy. I got a phone call the other day telling me that Walkerton needed a bakery. Another day the editor of the Shopper got told what is wrong with Walkerton. It seems that these same people who are quick to tell us what is wrong have no suggestions on how to improve our area. I would venture to say, these same people would also turn us down if we asked them to serve on any committee to bring about these ideas. I have asked many people to serve on various groups and the answer is always “I don’t have time, but I will tell you what is wrong.” Many of these people who do commit to serving forget about meetings and the working part of the occasions. Consequently, we have just a few people doing the work, then we hear that only a few people are running everything. The truth is that, the work is left to only a few. It is very disheartening to keep getting a no answer when a person asks for help. The Pumpkin Festival always has a lot of people who want to serve but where are they when the planning and work need to be done? So, about six people do it all, and they do a great job! Remember that the Great Pumpkin Festival is coming up on the 4th, sth and 6th of October. Julie and her merry band have a lot of good times planned. I understand that there will be a jail there. I’ll probably be in it all the time, with all the enemies and friends that I have. There is going to be a Miss Cutie Pumpkin and pumpkin doughnuts. Also pumpkin coffee will be sold thanks to Diane’s Gourmet Coffee Shop, in North Liberty. Isn’t North Liberty really looking good, with all the specialty shops? We’re trying Walkerton! We do have a new veternarian in the area. Dr. Meyer is building a new clinic on north 23. Have you been to the Kankakee Auction barn lately? It’s getting bigger and better all the time. It’s an interesting and fun way to spend Monday afternoon and evening. You can’t believe what people sell and buy. I need to have a auction at our house. Over the years we have collected quite a variety of items. I have talked long enough and grumbled too much. Keep on swatting the mosquites and flies. Americans consume billions of pounds of them a year. Now a fast-food restaurant chain is preparing to improve the perfections with a better french fry. Jack in the Box restaurants has introduced throughout its 1,300 restaurant system a new french fry that, through a

proprietary process, is crispier and can retain heat longer, delivering better product quality to the consumer, the company said. That’s a long way from the potato’s roots, but no surprise in a nation where the average per capita potato consumption is more than 100 pounds a year. How did the potato get so popular? The Irish white potato is actually native the the Peruvian Andes where it was a staple of the Inca diet. It was introduced to Europe by 16th Century Spanish exployers who saw the potato as cheap food for sailors. But the spuds weren’t an overnight sensation. According to historical records, Europeans thought potatoes were poisonous and shunned them as a food. Potatoes were blamed or credited, erroneously for everything from causing rickets to curing tuberculosis. Today as a fun food, french fries have no equal. They were invented by a French street vendor and sold as a snack. An Englishman exported the idea back home where they became a favorite of the working class as the “chips” in fish and chips. Thomas Jefferson was creditied with introducing french fries to the United States, although today in Moscow they are called American fries. “We consume about five billion pounds of french fries a year,” said Kirsten Hegberg-Purcell, senior product manager of Jack in the Box restaurants. She should know. HegbergPurcell is leading the company in the bold innovation of introducing a better french fry. The company, which sells more than 2,000 bags of french fries in each store each week, or about 120 million orders a year, believes the new product will be a big hit, she added.
