Kyle & Whitney Borton St. Pat's School Opens For The 1996-97 Year St. Patrick School, Walkerton, opened its fifth decade of education, on Monday, August 19. Enrollment in grades K to six rose by 33 percent over last year. The day was marked ; by a special celebration of ; the Eucharist and prayer to the Holy Spirit for help in the new school year. An assembly featured the reading of the book, “Gym Teacher From The Black Lagoon” by Mike Thaler. St. Patrick School celebrated its 40th anniversary this summer. This culminated a year-long feasibility study to decide future direction for the school. At the feasibility report, parents and parishioners decided to work toward keeping the school alive and growing. Most parents took active roles in publicizing the value of small, parochial school education. They contacted the media, printed and distributed flyers and made personal contacts to encourage other families to join St. Patrick School Community. The first day of school provided evidence of the intense work the parents accomplished. While some openings exist in grades two to six, the classes boast more students now than in the last five years. Committees of the Parents’ Association and of the School Board have been activated. A marketing committee that claims members of both groups has developed plans for the entire year. Families who have students at St. Pat’s and alumni have set their direction toward the year 2005, when the school will mark the beginning of its 50th year. This will coincide with the 150th anniversary of St. Patrick Parish as well as the 150th anniversary of the Town of Walkerton. Read The Classifieds
