Students in grades 1-12 in the John Glenn School Corporation will attend their first day of classes on Tuesday, August 20. Times are as follows: JGHS 7:59 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. NLES 8:10 a.m. - 2:45 p.m. UMS 7:55 a.m. - 2:55 p.m. WES 8:00 a.m. - 2:45 p.m. (Elementary students who walk home are dismissed at 2:45 p.m.) REGISTRATION Students attending John Glenn High School, North Liberty Elementary, Urey Middle School and Walkerton Elementary shall register on the following days: WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 14 12:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. THURSDAY, AUGUST 15 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Students enrolling in kindergarten must be five years of age on or before June 1 and must submit a legal birthday certificate and a completed physical form when registering. Arrangements must be made at WES or NLES for prescreening of kindergarten students. Kindergarten classes start on MONDAY, AUGUST 26. Students new to the John Glenn School Corporation should contact the guidance department in each school to schedule registration appointments during the week of August 12-16. All incoming kindergarten students and students new to the corporation must have inoculations up-to-date and new students in grades K-6 must have a physical on file before being admitted to school.

Parents should be prepared to pay textbook rental and fee costs upon registration. (first semester) $ 6.00 SCHOOL LUNCHES Lunches will cost SI.OO per day for grades 1-6 and $1.25 per day for Grades 7-12 Breakfast, which is served at Walkerton Elementary School and North Liberty Elementary School, will cost 55* BUS ROUTES Only minor changes in bus routes have been made for the coming school year. Parents and students should check at school during registration for changes in their bus route. Pick-up points for students in Walkerton and North Liberty will remain the same as last year. If you have questions about your bus driver or pick-up times, call the Superintendent’s office or your driver.

Porter-Rae Cemetery Tour Set For Aug. 21 Join Jan Shupert-Arick, Center for History Education Coordinator and a descendent of early settlers for an informative and interesting tour of PorterRae Cemetery, located in Potato Creek State park, on Wednesday, August 21, at 7:00 p.m. The Porter-Rae Cemetery reflects local rural life in the 19th century and includes burials from the African-American Huggart Settlement. There is a park entrance fee and for the tour meet at the cemetery parking lot. For more information contact the Northern Indiana Center for History at 2359664. JG Fall Sports To Open The Season Shortly The John Glenn High School Falcon football team will be playing against Fairfield in a controlled scrimmage on Saturday, August 17, at 6:00 p.m., at JGHS. The Falcon football team will then play in the Jamboree at Bremen, on Friday, August 23, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Tickets may be purchased in advance at the high school for $3.00. The Falcon Junior Varsity football team will open its season with a Jamboree at JGHS on Monday, August 26, at 6:00 p.m. The Freshman football team begins on Thursday, August 29 when they play Jimtown here at home at 6:00 p.m. Head football coach is Dan Drotar. The Falcon cross country team will open their season on Tuesday, Sept. 3, in Plymouth, at 5:00 p.m. The boys cross country team is coached by Tim Knowlton and the girls team is coached by Andrea Harter. CEMETERY ASSOCIATION TO MEET The Morris Cemetery Association will meet at the First Brethren Church, in Teegarden, at 7:30 p.m., on Friday, August 16. Lot owners and persons interested in the maintenance and perpetuation of the Morris Cemetery are asked to attend. NOTICE The Oregon Township Senior Citizens will meet on Thursday, August 15, at 12 noon, at St. Dominic’s Church Hall. You are asked to bring your own table service. The meal will be catered and come out and enjoy the fellowship and visit, play cards and also feel free to bring along a friend or two. Read The Classifieds team opens their season at South Bend Riley, on Tuesday, August 27, at 4:00 p.m. Head coach for the team is Bruce Fleming. The JGHS volleyball team will begin their season on Thursday, August 29, at 6:00 p.m. when they travel to Triton. Head volleyball coach is Scott Richie.

John Glenn School Board Minutes CALL TO ORDER The Board of School Trustees of the John Glenn School Corporation met in regular session on August 6, 1996, at 7:30 p.m., in the JG High School. All members were present except David Gensinger. The School Board, along with Supt. David McKee and ten observers, began the meeting with the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES The School Board minutes for the July 23, 1996 regular session were approved by unanimous consent. APPROVAL OF CLAIMS Ben Smith made a motion, seconded by Robert Schaeffer, to approve claims numbered 1,349 through 1,427. The motion was approved by a six to zero vote. 1. Approve JG School Building Corporation Claims for payment in the amount of $398,268.68 Robert Schaeffer made a motion, seconded by Janice Ryan, to approve the JG School Building Corp, claims for payment in the amount of $398,268.68. The motion was approved by a six to zero vote. OLD BUSINESS 1. Approve First Reading of Student Athletic Drug Testing Policy At the July 23, 1996 School Board meeting, a motion was made by Ryan and seconded by Shirley Anderson to approve the policy for the JGHS Student Athlete Drug Testing Program. The School Board reviewed the changes that had been made in the policy that further defines the purpose and intent of the policy and the period of time the student athlete will be eligible for random drug testing. Following further review of the policy, the motion was approved by a six to zero vote. The policy will be presented to the School Board for the second reading approval at the August 20, 1996 Board meeting. Public comment (Continued on Page 4)
