John Glenn School Board Minutes CALL TO ORDER The Board of School Trustees of the John Glenn School Corporation met in regular session on July 23, 1996, at 7:30 p.m., in the JG High School. All members were present except Tom McCormick. The Board, along with Supt. David McKee and seven observers, began the meeting with the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES The Board minutes for the July 2, 1996, regular session, were approved by unanimous consent. APPROVAL OF CLAIMS A motion was made by Ben Smith, seconded by Shirley Anderson, to approve claims numbered 1,252 through 1,348. The motion was approved by a six to zero vote. Connie Marek, bus driver A motion was made by Janice Ryan, seconded by David Gensinger, to approve the resignations as listed. The motion was approved by a six to zero vote. 2. Appointments a. Jill Finley, WES Vi time Music, Art, P.E. b. Justin Bogunia, WES, 6th Grade c. Cheryl Caine, WES, sth Grade d. Susan Lee, NLES, 3rd Grade Ryan made a motion, seconded by Robert Schaeffer, to approve the appointments as listed which was approved by a six to zero vote. 3. Approve the Use of Four Spare Buses The Board had previously agreed to trade in bus No. 7, a 1985 Ford, on the new 1997 school bus for the price of $1,500. Based on the experience of three spares not being sufficient at times to meet the needs, the recommendation was to have four spare buses in the fleet by keeping bus No. 7 to be used as a spare bus for the 1996-97 school year. A motion was made by

Schaeffer, seconded by Gensinger, to approve the recommendation to keep bus No. 7 and maintain four spare buses. The motion was approved by a six to zero vote. 4. Approve the 1997 General Fund, Debt Service Fund, Transportation Fund, Bus Replacement Schedule, Capital Projects Fund and Pre-School Education Budgets for advertisement Following the review of the 1997 budgets at special School Board work sessions on July 18 and 22, 1996, a motion was made by Ryan, seconded by Schaeffer, to approve the advertisement of the 1997 General Fund, Debt Service Fund, Transportation Fund, Bus Replacement Schedule, Capital Projects Fund and Pre-School Education Budgets. The motion was approved by a six to zero vote. Following advertisement of the budgets, the School Board will conduct a public hearing on the budgets at the August 20, 1996 school board meeting at JGHS. 5. Receive Conflict of Interest Statement The School Board received a Conflict of Interest Statement from David Gensinger. 6. Approve First Reading of Student Drug Testing Policy A motion was made by Ryan, seconded by Anderson, to approve the first reading of the Student Drug Testing Policy. Following discussion of the proposed Student Drug Testing Policy, Ryan made a motion, seconded by Anderson, to postpone the first reading approval pending revision in language on three items of the policy. The motion to approve postponement was approved by a six to zero vote. 7. Review Changes in JGHS Athletic Handbook The School Board reviewed proposed changes in the JGHS Athletic Handbook. The changes provide the recognition of students participating in girls softball and a new definition of a student’s sports for the purpose of disciplinary action. The Board will take action on the proposed changes at the next regular meeting. 8. Report on Cafeteria Computer Program Darlene Flora and Celeste Dooms, Cafeteria Manager at WES, reported on the progress of implementing a computerized lunch program at WES and plans to implement the program in the other schools this coming year. 9. Review School Board Policies — Section 5000 — Students The School Board reviewed School Board Policies under Section 5000 — Students of the School Board Policy Manual.

MARY M. COLE Mary Maxine Cole, 73, of Miller’s Merry Manor, Walkerton, passed away at 8:00 a.m., on Wednesday, July 31, after an extended illness. She was born on Jan. 23, 1923, in Sullivan and moved to North Liberty 48 years ago from Dugger. Surviving are two daughters, Maria Lana Fox, of Niles, MI and Margaret A. Cole, of South Bend; two sons, George R. and Clell A., both of South Bend; eight grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters. Services were held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday at the A. M. Manuel Funeral Home, North Liberty with Rev. Charles Richmond, officiating. Burial was in Sumntion Prairie fpmrtMv
