John Glenn Schools To Open On Tuesday, August 20th
Students in grades 1-12 in the John Glenn School Corporation will attend their first day of classes on Tuesday, August 20. Times are as follows: JGHS 7:59 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. NLES 8:10 a.m. - 2:45 p.m. UMS 7:55 a.m. - 2:55 p.m. WES 8:00 a.m. - 2:45 p.m. (Elementary students who walk home are dismissed at 2:45 p.m.) REGISTRATION Students attending John Glenn High School, North Liberty Elementary, Urey Middle School and Walkerton Elementary shall register on the following days: WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 14 12:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. THURSDAY, AUGUST 15 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Students enrolling in kindergarten must be five years of age on or before June 1 and must submit a legal birthday certificate and a completed physical form when registering. Arrangements must be made at WES or NLES for prescreening of kindergarten students. Kindergarten classes start on MONDAY, AUGUST 26. Students new to the John Glenn School Corporation should contact the guidance department in each school to schedule registration appointments during the week of August 12-16. All incoming kindergarten students and students new to the corporation must have inoculations up-to-date and new students in grades K-6 must have a physical on file before being admitted to school. BOOK RENTAL FEES Parents should be prepared to pay textbook rental and fee costs upon registration. Parents and students should check at school during registration for changes in their bus route. Pick-up points for students in Walkerton and North Liberty will remain the same as last year. If you have questions about your bus driver or pick-up times, call the Superintendent’s office or your driver. ORIENTATION AT UREY Harold C. Urey Middle School will have a Middle School orientation for next year’s seventh grade students and their parents, on Thursday, August 8, from 7:00 thru 8:00 p.m. Information will be distributed in the gymnasium of the school concerning the seventh grade schedule information and fall registration procedures.

Walkerton And North Liberty To Receive Grant U.S. Representative Tim Roemer announced on Friday, August 2, that lowincome homeowners in the Towns of Walkerton and North Liberty, will soon receive a $46,000 Housing Preservation grant from the Rural Economic Development Administration to help rehabilitate their homes. The grant will be administered by the Housing Assistance Office Inc. (HAO) of St. Joseph County. HAO is a regional nonprofit organization whose purpose is to work with local communities, families and individuals to obtain affordable housing in northern Indiana. “The Housing Preservation Grant funds will be used to supplement $243,390 in HOME funds received from the St. Joseph County Housing Consortium and local funds from the Towns of Walkerton and North Liberty,” said Mr. James Oleksak, the Rural and Housing Development Director for HAO. “The Housing Preservation Grant funds will expand the rehab program to an additional four homeowners. We plan on spending about $12,000 per home on needed rehabilitation. A total of I about 24 homes will be rehabed and local contractors will perform the work.” “The rehabilitation program makes good economic sense and responds to a real need,” said Roemer. “The percentage of homeowners in smaller towns in the 3rd District is above average and the majority of homes are over 40 years old. The rehab program provides an opportunity for homeowners to improve their personal asset as well as improve the overall housing stock in the community. lam pleased that this project, which includes the close cooperation of the private and public sector, will play a major role in the revitalization of the Towns of Walkerton and North Liberty. Oregon-Davis Schools To Open Thurs., August 15 Classes for all students of the Oregon-Davis Schools will begin on Thursday, August 15. Classes will be from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. at the Elementary and from 8:00 a.m. until 3:10 p.m. at the Jr-Sr High School. BACK TO SCHOOLQ Kindergarten classes will meet from 8:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. for the morning class and 12:15 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. for the afternoon class. A child must be five years of age on or before June 1, 1996, to be eligible for Kindergarten and six years of age on or before June 1, 1996, to be eligible for first grade. If things go as planned, both schools will be utilizing a computerized accounting system for breakfast/lunch purchases. This system will operate as follows: You can pay by the week, by the month, by the semester or by the year. Each child will have a student LD. Card (Elementary cards will be kept by the school) the amount of money paid will be entered into your account and deducted as your child eats breakfast/lunch (makes purchases). BOOK RENTAL CHARGES WILL BE AS FOLLOWS: Half-Day Kindergarten $30.00 Full-Day Kindergarten $60.00 Grades 1-6 $60.00 Grades 7-12 Will Be Charged According To Classes Taken Book rental assistance forms will be available for those who may have needs in this area at registration. In compliance with State law, any student enrolled in school for the first time is to furnish the school with written immunization history accompanied by a physician’s certificate or other documentation. No child by law is to be permitted to attend school for more than 20 days beyond the date of enrollment without this immunization documentation. Also, the law states that all students entering the sixth grade must have proof at time of registration of a second measles vaccination. SCHOOL LUNCHES The school cafeteria will serve lunches beginning August 15 and breakfast beginning August 19. Lunch tickets for the coming year will be sl.lO per day for students in Grades k-6 and $1.20 per day for students in Grades 712. Extra milk will cost 25 cents each. Applications for the free and reduced lunch program will be available at registration. In addition to lunch, the Elementary will continue to serve breakfast at a cost of 75 cents per day, beginning August 19th. The Jr-Sr High School will continue to serve breakfast ala carte style at a varying cost depending upon items taken. Those students qualifying for free and reduced lunch will retain that status for breakfast at the Elementary only.

a single person with an income of $14,250 or less would qualify. A two person family with an income of $16,300 or less would qualify, and a family of four with an income of $20,350 or less would qualify.
