Wardman vowed to do all she could in loving memory of her beloved brother who was missing in action in the service of World War 11. He never returned to his grieving family. Perhaps this has been a driving force behind Amybelle all these years. She has served on most chairmanships and the following offices in the Unit as Unit President, 16 years; Vice President, eight years; secretary-treasurer, 17 years and Chaplain, one year. In Third District many chair-

manships and Sgt-At-Arms for two years were served. The 40 & 8 is a subsidiary of the American Legion Auxiliary primarily assisting children who are afflicted with cystic fibrosis and lung and other respiratory diseases. Amybelle was Le Chapeau of the St. Joseph County Salon 156 in 1960-61, serving other offices and chairmanships also. The Americanism program of the Auxiliary has been her top priority these many years. At the unit meeting, many partiotic skits and songs are lustily sung and remembered. Her lovely programs always adds a little life to our evening. Appearing before adult groups and students, she demonstrates proper flag etiquette and distributes flags and flag codes. Patriotic displays are made in local store windows and various meeting rooms. Her Americanism yearround programs certainly are a splendid way to display love and respect for our country.” At the convention dinner, Mrs. Wardman was seated at the Dept, president’s table of honor. Escorted to the head table she was introduced and presented with a framed citation and a gift as “Woman of the Year.” Accompaning Amybelle to the dinner were her daughter, Karen Webster and granddaughter, Jessica Cable, both of whom are Auxiliary members. They, too, were introduced to the delegates. Past Indiana Department presidents were also introduced and honored. The main address was given by the National president of the American Legion Auxiliary, Syble Deshotel, of Louisiana, who gave an inspiring message of her visits to various departments in the United States and foreign countries. She spoke impressively of visiting military cemeteries in Belguim and France around Memorial Day where the immortal Flanders Field poppy was very evident in Flanders Field. It was with great pride that Orville Easterday Unit 189 elected Amybelle Wardman as their candidate for Auxiliary Member of the Year, ultimately achieving
