Public Library hopes to be moved into its new location by January I, 1997. The move to the new location, 300 Michigan Street, Walkerton^ (former Brass Lion building), will add some new technology, materials and features to the facility. Through a grant and bond issue the Library will be able to display materials that it has not been able to display at the present location. To begin with the Library has already purchased an IBM compatible computer with a printer. This computer will be loaded with software programs that people will be able to access to help them answer questions; they bring in. • * ' * **< ' < < < 1 . V I ‘ \
Some of the programs will be from encyclopedias, but there will also be atlas and other reference programs. The older computer of the Library’s, an Apple II GS, will be put out with its Appleworks program for people to use as a word processor, data base and spread sheet. It also will have a printer that may be used. The Library will be switching over to an automated circulation system. Books will be checked in and out by computer. The software for this program has not been decided upon yet, but it is hoped that the program will allow patrons to review their own records and reserve books. The program will also be used as a card catalog even though the Library plans on keeping its old catalog for some years, but the new books will be added into the computer system. The Library will be hooking up to the Internet also during their move. The original plan was to hook up through John Glenn School System, however the Library has also applied for a grant from the State for an Internet hook up and two work stations. Even if the Library does not receive the grant it will have at least one terminal. Finally the Library will be expanding their book cassette collection and video collection. The audio collection has been growing quickly the past year. The Library now owns over 30 titles with more ordered each month. Also the Library owns about 30 videos with more to be come available, but until the move there will be no way to check these videos out of the Library. The video collection will consist of travel, how-to and informational materials. Children’s videos will be based on books. The Library will not be trying to compete with the video stores and will be buying videos as the budget allows. In the future the Library hopes to start a music collection. The Community Room will be open for meetings and gatherings though no policies have ben set up for this yet. Groups that wish to meet at the new Library will find folding tables, chairs and even a coffee maker. The room will also be used for displays. One entire wall will be used for hanging displays while larger or three-dimensional objects can be set up in the room. And finally the Library will be hosting the Walkerton Historical Society’s Heritage Room. This room will be donated to the Historical Society for the next several years as their , museum. They will be able, * \ <4 V \
