Kevin and Janice Pattengale, recently returned from a 600 mile bicycle trip which was sponsored by the Happy Hollow Camp for Children with Diabetes and the Diabetes Youth Foundation of Indiana. There were 32 teens with diabetes along with counselors and medical staff completing the trip in two weeks time. The trip began at Bay City State Park, Michigan and followed the coast line of Lake Michigan to Mackinaw City. Turning

west after reaching the top of the lower peninsula, the trip ended at Holland State Park. In spite of most of the trip being plagued by rain and cold, the group averaged over 80 miles a day. Nights were spent in State Parks along the route. Traveling this amount of distance is not what makes this trip unique. The unique part of this trip is that all of the teens participating have insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. The program was originally developed to provide enough activity to offer a realistic physical challenge to each participant and for the teen to have the opportunity to see the effect of this sustained exercise on blood sugar control. Adapting diet and insulin dosages to sustained, high level activity is useful in planning other athletic programs. Advantage is taken of the time together and the data collected daily by each rider to help the teens learn more about their diabetes. The program was developed and is led by Samuel Wentworth, M.D., , of Danville, IN. The goal was to establish and “Outward Bound’’ type of program for teens with diabetes. Due to the expanding interest in bicycling, this activity was selected to provide the challenge. Although there are other high activity type programs for teens, this is currently the only such “bicycle adventure” for teens with diabetes in the country. The distance and nature of this activity has made the trip unique enough that it has been the subject of presentations at three international conferences about diabetes and camping. teens with diabetes from Russia. This year 15 Russian teens joined the group and will be attending the camp at Happy Hollow as well. This was the first program for teens with diabetes officially endorsed by the Russian government. American teens taking part in the program this year came from Indiana, Texas, Wisconsin and Michigan. The program was made possible by the generous support of the Hendricks Community Foundation, Eli Lilly and the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. Happy Hollow Camp for Children with Diabetes is located at 1300 E. Main, Danville, IN 46122. Kids won’t find any boring reminders of tedious school work here. Our Vacation Bible Ship program will provide fun, memorable Bible-learning activities for kids of all ages. Each day kids will sing catchy songs, play team work-building games, nibble tasty treats from the ship’s galley, sail
