VOICE OF THE I PEOPLE |

FOURTH OF JULY The Fourth of July has come and gone. We watched some mighty pretty fireworks, from our country road. The beauty of the high displays had to be seen from a distance to really appreciate them. Os course, the ground displays are not as nice as were those created by Leonard and Greg. I may be wrong, but I heard a rumor that these two may be helping next year. I, truly hope that they do. I would like to make a couple of comments known, that I was told by a few unhappy viewers. There were a couple of bad wash-outs on the hill behind the backstop and the lack of grass was very obvious. There were several comments about the garbage can with a sign for donations propped against it. I don’t think garbage was the preferred currency. Originally, it was my understanding, that people were to be holding buckets for donations. I do know that Mildred McKesson along with Barb Burket and Morris Searfoss were there earlier working very hard. It would have been better to have the third gate opened, especially at closing time, with the main gate opening onto the Midway, there was a big back-up. One more grumble, dusk begins around nine, not ten. The Friends of the Fourth must be commended for their work in getting the show together in the time span that they had. As I have said before this is a

group that needs more help. I am sure that the Friends would be very happy to have more people volunteer to help with next year’s show. Well the Float-A-Rama took place in spite of nasty weather or I should say, the possibility of bad weather at Koontz Lake. Ray Chapman had quite a crew aboard the Chamber of Commerce float. Every year Marian and Ray donate their pontoon for the Chamber’s entry. This year Kackie and Crew decorated it, but declined to ride in the event. Thanks Kenny Chapman for representing the Chamber Board. The Chamber Golf Outing is coming up on the 31st of July. It sounds like a fun time. Get your sign up sheets back as quickly as possible. Next week, the LaPorte County and Starke County 4-H Fairs start. Now is a good time to think about buying an animal from one of the local young people at the livestock auctions held at the fair’s conclusion. Most of these young people work very hard on their projects and deserve an extra boost. I always go and play bingo at Hamlet and usually lose a couple of dollars. It used to be fairtime at the end of summer not at the beginning. Maybe the state board of education should allow the participants to attend the state fair like they used to do. I think that Four H is just as important as any athletic event in youth programs. Fairtime should be in Autumn time, not summertime. At least the

we started the clean up. It wasn’t long until one by one family members and neighbors started arriving. Tree removal and wood cutting is not an easy task but many hands help to lighten the load. We continued to work until 9:30 p.m. Everyone stayed until we were ready to leave and never did we hear a complaint or grumble from anyone. Everyone including the children pitched in whole heartedly to help with what could have been a grim task. We have a great deal of work to do yet, but we are so grateful for all the help we have received. Simply saying Thank You seems very inadequate. Bob and I love the woods and even though we hated loosing so many trees we were very fortunate the out come could have been much worse. There is some structual damage to the house and one barn, but our loving heavenly Father was there watching over us and no one was injured. Praise the Lord!
