All regular education students in grades three, six and 10 were required by state law to participate in the Indiana Statewide Testing for Educational Progress (ISTEP) program. The testing included new sections this year in applied
writing and mathematics. The scores from these sections will not be available until August. Instead of identifying those students who did not make the prescribed score for passing the essential skills, the ISTEP program now defines students into three general levels of knowledge and skills relevant to the educational proficiency content standards. These levels are as follows: the advanced learner - students who have mastered the subject matter to a high degree; the proficient learner - students who have demonstrated a basic command of the fundamentals for the subject matter; and the apprentice learner - students who have not established a reasonable command of the fundamental knowledge. The students in grade three scored at the state average, ranking 572 out of 1,131 schools; students in grade six scored significantly above the state average, ranking 107 out of 705 schools; and students in grade 10 were slightly below the state average, ranking 255 our of 355 schools. 3.
