Naturalist Activites At Potato Creek The Nature Center at Potato Creek State Park is now open everyday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Children visiting the center who are under 12 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. On Thursday, June 20, at 9 a.m. is the park patch program for children five and up at the Nature Center followed at 10 a.m. with Beach Combers Hike that will be for an hour and a half along the lake. Meet at Orchard Shores West Shelter. Then at 2 p.m. is the customs and practices of fire making program at Peppermint Hill shelter. At 9:00 p.m. is the Summer Solstice program at the C-Ground Campfire Cirlce. On Friday, June 21 at 9 a.m. is the park patch program followed at 2 p.m. with frog feathers and hen’s teeth program in the Nature Center auditorium. Then at 8 p.m. is the evening escapades where a walk to discover the changes at dusk at the park. Meet at Whispering Winds area. Saturday, June 22, at 9 a.m. is the park patch program followed at 10 a.m. with rattlesnake

Sift flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar together. Add shortening, cutting in with pastry blender until crumbly. Stir in egg and milk. Spread in greased 8inch round cake pan. Bake in a 425° oven for 15 minutes.

At 9 a.m. is the park patch program followed at 10 a.m. with the cemetery tour of PorterRea Cemetery that is located inside the park. Then at 2 p.m. in the auditorium is the going, going, gone program on the endangered animals. Monday, June 24 the 9 a.m. park patch program at the Nature Center will be held followed at 10 a.m. with the bike hike to the wetlands for the two and a half hour journey. You are to meet at the bike rental area. Then at 2 p.m. is wild about natives for the one hour hike to look at the native flora up close and personal. Meet at the family campground gate for this one. Tuesday, June 25 the usual park patch program will be held at 9 a.m. and then at 2 p.m. is the wild edibles at the Nature Cen-
This being the middle of June, strawberries have come into their own. We like them best served plain, with plenty of rich whole milk —or, better yet, half-and-half In these days of diet fads, many folks have forgotten what good yellow cream tastes like. It’s best not to consider 1 calories in strawberry season. * I For a change, I sometimes serve strawberry shortcake. We like a & biscuit dough, slightly sweetened and made with plenty of shortening. The dough is patted into shape in two round cake pans, covered generously with melted butter, and baked until done. One layer is put into a glass baking dish, covered with strawberries which have previously been washed and sweetened; then the other layer is put on top and berries are piled about it as high as the dish will permit. The shortcake is served slightly warm. “Ummmm! Good!” as the children say. Wild strawberries are plentiful, too. Out in the woods and along the railroad one may gather a quart in seemingly no time at all. May Allread Baker

STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE
Topping 2 pts. fresh strawberries 1 c. sugar ‘Z c. heavy cream 1 t. vanilla
Wash, hull, and slice strawberries into a medium bowl. Gently stir in sugar. Let stand. In a small bowl, whip cream. Add vanilla. Split shortcake. Place on serving platter cut side up. Spoon half of strawberry mixture on the cake. Top with other half of shortcake, cut side down. Add remaining berries and cream.
