NSC GOLF CHAMPS John Glenn’s golf team captured the 1996 Northern State Conference Championship, on Saturday, May 18, on the Swan Lake West Cource, Plymouth-LaPorte Trail, with a 325 total. Falcons who last won the NSC in 1986. LaVille had won the tourney for the past seven straight years. Senior Brian Lyle tied for medalist honors shooting a 78, but was defeated in a play-off by Mark Rottering, of Knox and Matt Stockton, of New Prairie. Placing on the AllConference Team with Lyle for the Falcons were Brett Hulse and Justin Daube, both scoring 81’s. Glenn Golf Team! GLENN GOLFERS DEFEAT O-D The JG golf team defeated Oregon-Davis 161 to 192 at the Hamlet Golf Course, on Tuesday, May 14. Senior Ryan Schmeltz returned to the Falcon lineup and responded with a medalist round of 39 to lead all golfers. Other scores for Glenn were Justin Daube with a 40; Brian Lyle and Bill Meyer with 41’s and Torey Collins with a 42. Levi Wilson and Brian Earnest scored well at 43 for the Bobcats. Jim Schroff finished with a 49 followed by Nathan Scott 57 and Brad Hazelton with a 65. The Falcons have now won five matches in a row to raise their record to 8 wins and 7 defeats. Oregon-Davis dropped to one and nine on the season. BDC at their annual meeting held on April 25th. The BDC is a non-profit development company created to encourage economic development in St. Joseph County. The BDC promotes the retention and expansion of exisiting business and the development of new businesses by providing long term loans for fixed asset purchases or real estate improvements. BDC loans are intended to supplement private financing and are to be used to provide “gap financing” necessary to support a business project that otherwise might not occur. Behr has been the Executive Director of the WAEDC in Walkerton since 1989. Business Women Award Scholarship To David Guseilla The Walkerton Business and Professional Women’s
Club awarded the first of its SSOO scholarships to John Glenn senior David Guseilla. The award was presented on Monday, May 20, at the JG annual Academic Awards Night program by Barbara Osowski, president of the local club. Guseilla is the son of Dan and Kathy Guseilla. He is planning on majoring in chemistry at Butler University where he plans to do research and later specialize in a certain field of chemistry such as polymers. Applicants were chosen on the basis of scholarship, financial need, character and community service. Members of the scholarship committee were patty Kennedy, Helen Verkier and Marty Malstaff. Bicycle Safety Program Held At St. Pat's Linda Allsop spent Wednesday afternoon, on May 15, with the first and second grade classes at St. Patrick School, in Walkerton, explaining and demonstrating bicycle safety. Allsop was one of the community helpers invited by Mrs. Cindy Moore, first and second grade teacher. Her presentation included the examination of a bicycle helmet that had been split
