Spring Spectacular May 17 & 18 At At JGHS Friday and Saturday, May 17 and 18, at 7:30 p.m. marks John Glenn’s 10th annual Spring Spectacular. This years show is extra special in that all former show choir and jazz band members will be joining in the celebration with special musical selections in celebration of this very auspicious occasion. There will be two rehearsals for the Alumni joining the group on Thursday, May 9 and Thursday, May 16, from 7-8:30 p.m. We hope you will mark your calendars for all or any of the nights and join us in making the most “Spectacular” Spring Spec, ever! NOTICE The Oregon Township Senior Citizens will meet, on Thursday, May 16, at 12 noon, at St. Dominic’s Church Hall. You are asked to bring your own table service. The meal will be catered. Come and enjoy the fellowship and visit, play cards and please, bring a friend. FORMER RESIDENT EXPERIENCES QUAKE While Mrs. Mildred Cranmer, of Koontz Lake, was talking with a former Koontz Lake resident, Mrs. Catherine Lewis, in Belleview, Washington, an earthquake happened at the very time they were talking on the phone. This was last Thursday, May 2, and the quake registered a 5.4. JG PROM To Be To Be Held May 11 The John Glenn High School Jr.-Sr. Prom will be held at the Pine Lake Inn, LaPorte, formerly the Holiday Inn, on Saturday, May 11. Activities will begin at 9:00 p.m. There will not be After Prom activities at John Glenn High School following the prom, this Saturday, May 11. Students will be going to Six Flags Great America, on Sunday

O-D Academic Team Places Third On Saturday, April 27, the Oregon-Davis English Academic Team placed third in their division at the Ameritech Hoosier Academic Super Bowl State competition, held in Indianapolis. This event is co-sponsored by the Indiana Association of Secondary School Principals. The team tied or bettered the top scores in the other three divisions. This is the first team from Oregon-Davis to ever make it to a state competition in any event, academic or athletic. Members of the team are four seniors and they are Jeremy Bottorff, captain; Tamara Orr, Misty Walter and Dolores Godoy. Coaches were Mrs. Debra Awald and Mrs. Donna Moore-Flaugher. In order to qualify for the state competition, the team had to compete in a regional event. Oregon-Davis placed first in the English division at the North Judson Regional on April 16. Not only did they bea' all of the teams in all of the divisions represented, but their score of 21 was the highest score of the evening. The following day, after all of the scores m the state were tabulated, the teams eligible to advance to si; 'e were announced. Os all the schools in the state in Class Four, only six teams from each class advanced and Oregon Davis’ English team can be extremely proud of its third place finish, as well as proud of their team members. Jeremy Bottorff intends to attend Butler University, in Indianapolis, to stuuy public and corporate communications. Tamara Orr, the senior class valedictorian, won the highly competitive Presidential Merit Scholarship award, which will allow her to attend Saint Mary’s College, in South Bend. Misty Walter plans on attending Indiana University, at Bloomington and aspires to become a doctor of medical research. Dolores Godoy plans on going to Lexington College, in Chicago, with future plans including hotel-restaurant management.
Urey Tops All Others In Academic Super Bowl “Women” was this year’s theme for the Hoosier Academic Super Bowl, held at Bremen Middle School, on Saturday, May 4. The Urey squad competed against 13 other area schools in a variety of subjects that were all related to the theme. Students had to prepare themselves on all aspects of the theme, from the influence of women such as Eleanor Roosevelt and Betty Friedan to reading the novel, “Invincible Louisa” by Cornelia Meigs. After many hours of after-school study, their efforts were rewarded at the May 4th contest. The Urey teams, consisting of three to five members in five different subject areas, had the best cumulative score of all 13 teams at the regional answering 93 out of 125 questions correctly. This gave them an unofficial first place finish. Other schools included Plymouth Jr. High, Bremen Middle School, Schmucker Middle

School, Grissom Middle School, LaVille Jr. High, Bieger Middle School and Rochester Middle School. The Interdisciplinary squad finished in first place, with the science squad coming in third place. Math came in fourth, while social studies scored as many points as the third place team. English, missing only three questions, finished in sixth place. Team members include eighth graders Matt Alspaugh, Jaymie Baker, Brad Hartsell, Julianne Houston, Chris Long, Adalee Pairitz and Ben Swank. Seventh grade team members include Marianne Allsop, Shana Collier, Lauren Heemer, Betsy Hummel, Jennifer Kemble and Rachel Long. The academic team is sponsored by Urey teachers, Andy Stegemiller and Lisa Cox.

John Glenn School Board Election Held The primary election is over and the unofficial count is in . . . with the winners being Rob Keck over Mark Batman by approximately 70 votes and Thomas McCormick over Tom Popovic by approximately 200 votes. Unopposed in the school board election were Shirely Anderson, from Johnson Township and Janice Ryan from Lincoln Township. Also serving on the board are Robert Schaeffer, Lincoln Township; Ben Smith, Polk Township and Dave Gensinger, Liberty Township. Rob Keck will be representing Polk Township while Tom McCormick will represent Liberty Township on the John Glenn School Board. IMMUNIZATION CLINCI IN NORTH LIBERTY The St. Joseph County Health Dept, will be conducting an Immunization Clinic at the North Liberty Community Center, 300 S. Main, on Tuesday, May 14, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. No appointment is necessary. All children must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian and all previous shot records are needed for immunizations. Now is the time to get immunizations for children entering kindergarten and the sixth grade this fall. Avoid the crowds and hassle this summer. For further information you may call 235-9783. ATHLETIC SLIPS OFFERED AT JGHS The IHSAA athletic physical will be offered at John Glenn High School, on Tuesday, May 21, beginning at 8:00 a.m. Students entering grades 1011 and 12, for the 1996-97 school year, who plan to participate in athletics, may obtain an athletic physical by completing the student and parent section of the IHSAA form and returning it along with the $7 fee. The physical form and fee must be returned to the JGHS athletic department by Friday, May 17.
