VOICE OF THE PEOPLE
(Continued from Page 2) Glenn. Could there be something detrimental to our Life, Liberty and Pursuit of Happiness and therefore, the need of removing the name John Glenn from our school corporation? There are many more pressing and important decisions for the School Board to take under consideration which should take priority. Amybelle Wardman MY TURN The other evening I turned on the TV to Channel 16. Lo and behold, guess what? They were discussing the possibility of a name change for Urey Middle School. Several young students were talking about Urey urinals. Catchy name. Unique. Where were the teachers, who started the whole thing? Too embarrassed to commit? Anyway the young people were discussing urinals and such. Each one of the students included . . . and stuff. What Stuff? I find it hard to believe that this same age of student, who when corrected by an adult, doesn’t hesitate to give the finger sign or use the four letter word connected to a female pronoun, would find it upsetting by someone painting urinals around. I talked to a neighbor, whose mascot was the Trojans. Guess what they found imprinted on the underpasses? He said they just fought a little harder at their sports events when the culprits were playing. This is an excellent opportunity for the teachers to teach about Dr. Urey, Walkerton’s only Nobel Peace Prize winner. Our Historical Society should be putting out literature and markers

where the gentleman was born and where he lived for a year and a half. It was on Ohio Street, either 605 or 506. This was stated in a letter written in 1967 to the Editor of The Independent News from Dr. Urey. Several of the older residents remember. Sometimes we have to listen. Let’s get busy, Walkerton Historical Society. When I first came to Walkerton thirty-seven years ago, I knew who Dr. Urey was. I knew that he had discovered the neutron that made it possible for Nuculear Fission. I asked some for some information about him and why wasn’t something named after this very important man. I couldn’t get very many answers. In fact nobody seemed to know too much about the origins of Walkerton. Why aren’t we teaching a little local history? Walkerton has a lot to be proud of, and not the least is Dr. Harold C. Urey. By the way students and teachers, the equipment and materials that Dr. Urey used in his studies and experiments were jokingly referred to by his associates as Urey’s plumbing. There’s not much new under the sun is there? Just new discoveries or old ones unearthed. I have more to write on this subject of the bomb. I grew up on the West Coast and we were mighty glad when the bomb ended the war. More later. Sincerely, Nedra Williams NLES Lists Honor Roll The North Liberty Elementary School is pleased to announce the third nine week honor roll for the 1995-96 school year as follows: Fourth Grade Distinguished
