VOICE OF THE PEOPLE ~——— — «
Some individuals have voiced their opinion regarding the use of Harold C. Urey’s name for our middle school. Because he contributed to the development of the atomic bomb, they claim that his name should not be used in this era of nuclear disarmament. There are several reasons that this argument is weak. Primarily, Dr. Urey’s research was not focused on discovering technology with which to develop weapons. He was studying the nature of atoms. Research of this type was a natural progression in the development of technology and has > a multitude of implications beyond the atomic bomb. His discoveries were necessary to develop nuclear power. His discoveries were necessary to develop methods for determining the age of ancient artifacts (carbon dating). His discoveries were necessary to help develop a more accurate understanding of one of the fundamental building blocks of everything in the universe, the atom. Rather than chastising

I Dr. Urey for his contributions to the atomic bomb, he should be praised for what his work has allowed us to do today. People frequently have a very narrow perspective of an issue, only regarding that which supports their cause. I think everyone should look at the entire picture and realize that Harold C. Urey was a brilliant scientist. Though he may have actually participated in the Manhattan Project, he did so reluctantly. In the end, he was a man whose work was used to develop the atomic bomb instead of a man who aimed to develop the atomic bomb. Notice the difference. After all, he did receive the Nobel Prize. I am proud to have graduated from Harold C. Urey Middle School. Tim Pletcher Dear Walkerton High School Band Parents & Community: Thank you for opening your hearts and your homes to our children. We’ve heard many “glowing” reports of your hospitality. This was a learning experience they will always
remember. You welcomed them with sunshine and warmth, they returned to an ice storm and 30 degree temperatures. Host families . . . Please Send Spring! Sincerely, Parents of the Spooner Pride Marching Band ATTENTION PUMPKIN PLANTERS In order to have those big, round, beautiful pumpkins by the time the “Great Pumpkin Festival” comes to town — it is time to get those seeds in the ground. Maybe your pumpkin can walk away with the grand prize! See you then! The Old Gardner April 23, 1996 John Glenn School Corporation Board Walkerton, IN In the April 17, 1996 issue of the South Bend Tribune, an article pertaining to Walkerton was titled “Whai’s In A Name?” When an individual names their child, a family name or that of a friend is used at times. Some children are named for a noted person such as George Washington (and the sur-name) or Abraham Lincoln (and the sur-name). The name chosen probably was to honor a person for perhaps, an outstanding trait, deed or for the continuity of a particular name. In the case of the April 17 article, it was for the purpose of the removal of a name. The one teacher states “It’s like we’re out there in space, and no one knows who we are.” Space — Dr. Harold C. Urey looked for new directions and found them in the

natural world. He searched for the earliest records of the origin of the earth, sun, and planets, and for the origin of life. His book “The Planets: Their Origin and Development” (1952) may have been the beginning of the science of cosmochemistry (the chemistry of the universe). Dr. Urey was one of a small handful of nativeborn American scientists whose ability and achievements made them equals of the great Europeans who came to the United States after the rise of Adolf Hitler. The brilliant scholars in the United States had a part in world leadership in science in training students for leadership. Urey’s own discoveries continue to be used. Stable isotopes have uses in every field of scientific research. A quote from the book “The Great Scientists” edited by Frank N. Magill, states: “Scientists who use Urey as a model consciously or otherwise, are honoring qualities considered as
characteristically Americangenerosity, neighborliness, hard work, and clean living.” These words honored a Nobel prize winner. How many towns or cities can be so honored as to have a Nobel prize winner born and living in their town or city, even if for a few years? If the students and teachers at Urey Middle School do not know the background of this man, then it is time for required research of the students (and teachers) in one of their classes. Renaming the school? Then make it also John Glenn Elementary North and John Glenn Elementary South. Harold C. Urey Middle School has claimed many awards and honors on their own merits under that name without the name “John Glenn.” Perhaps, search the Congressional Records of the United States Senate for the actions of Senator John (Continued on Page 5)
