UMW MEET The Walkerton United Methodist Women met in the home of Mildred Smith, on Monday, April 15, at 1 p.m. There were 15 present for the afternoon. The hostess served delicious refreshments prior to the meeting. President, Loretta Pressel, opened the meeting by reading the 32nd chapter eighth verse of Psalms followed by a prayer. The secretary report was given by Mary Hahn and the correspondence was read from Millie Daniels and Alta Ray. There were 29 cards signed for shut-ins and those we need to remember in our prayers. The treasurers report was given by Elsie Keck. Those attending the Vision 2000, held at Notre Dame, were Loretta Pressel, Fudge Klopfenstein, Cheryl Flaugher, Penni Fansler, Mary Bierly and Dorothy Lacy. Those attending the spring Inspiration Day, on Sat., April 13, at the Lakeville United Methodist Church, were Marilyn Wallace, Fudge Klopfenstein, Millie Daniels, Linda Klinedinst, June Ernsberger and Loretta Pressel. Thursday, May 9th, with a pot luck dinner at 6:30 p.m. The officers will furnish the meat and the drinks will also be provided for. Bring your own table service. Also mark your calendar for June 8, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon is the Celebration of Diversity and will be held at the Elkhart United Methodist Church. It will be a time to meet other ethnic people and to eat different cooked food. The School of Christian Mission will be July 24-27, at Manchester College. Now is the time to get your reservations in. Scholarships are available. A donation was sent to the district in memory of our devoted long-time member, Mary Jane Beaty. The devotions were given by Velma Stahly and the lesson by Evelyn Awald. The next meeting will be held at the home of Loretta Pressels, on May 13, at 1 p.m. Mildred Smith has the devotions and Opal Bullinger will give the lesson. The meeting dismissed with a prayer. Woman’s Community Club met at Al’s Diner, Koontz Lake, on Friday, April 19, with 18 members enjoying the delicious breakfast. The tables were decorated by Pamela Kaplowitz and Freda Meyer and were very attractive. The opening prayer was given by Mildred Casey and the devotions were given by Dorothy Dolmer. The meeting was opened by the president, Barbara Simpson, by reminiding the members that our summer gettogether in June will be having dinner and attending a play at the Wagon Wheel Playhouse, in Warsaw. Janet Bierly, treasurer, reported that the bake sale on March 9th netted the club $151.50. Shirley Awald, secretary, gave her report on the state convention that was held in Indianapolis and was attended by Mrs. Simpson and herself, on April 13 and 14. There were 120 members at the convention. Mildred Casey, international affairs chairman, gave a very interesting report on the United Nations which had its 50th anniversary in 1995. Nadine Keiper, publicity chairman, reported on the St. Joseph County GFWC convention held in South Bend on March 16. At that convention Mrs. Simpson was elected as president of the county clubs. Mrs. Simpsot)..will 7 t^Xe office, in September. Carol Knop will be installed in Sept, as the new president of the Walkerton club. Mrs. Simpson informed the group that the International conference of the GFWC will be held in Nashville, Tenn, this year at the Opryland Hotel, June 15-18. The birthday celebrants were Helen Heymig and Florence Vische with Mrs. Heymig receiving the present. A drawing was held for the door prize and Mrs. Awald was the recipient. The president gave a short report on the state convention and proudly presented the club with a certificate of honor awarded to them for their 75 years of cooperation and service. She also reminded the club that the May 3rd meeting will be held at the clubhouse at 12 noon with a carry-in luncheon planned. This will be the last meeting of the club until Sept. Tri Kappa News Zeta Pi Tri Kappa met at the North Liberty Community Building, on Wed., April 10, at 7:30 p.m., with the officers giving their reports after the opening song, verse and roll call were given. A report was heard on the Fine Arts Fair to be held on Sunday, April 28, by Susan Groves who also asked for members to sign up to help with this
project. Eileen Wyant and Sandy Clingenpeel informed the chapter that their committee would be taking the senior citizens to the play at John Glenn and that the children’s program on April 22 with the first grade at Liberty Elementary. The province officers, Linda Gray, of Beta Gamma, in Mishawaka, was introduced by president Pam Wallace. Linda explained what Tri Kappa is doing as a whole on the state level. She also informed up that the chapters state wide have donated over 1 million dollars to the Riley Children’s Hospital. She also answered questions and explained how our chapter can improve locally and state wide. At the close of the meeting refreshments were served. The next meeting will be on Wed., May Bth. Harold Schweder remains in
the hospital following knee surgery. Friday was our usual sing-a-long day with Verice Walz at the piano and Virginia Anhold leading the singing. The table prayer during the week was given by Larua Minter and Caroline Hampe. Upcoming events include the entertainment by Florence Seeking and Verl Haag on Thursday, April 25th. Another foot clinic will be held on May Bth and then on May 10th we will be entertained by Maxine Worthington and friends. It may seem a long time away but on May 29th Violet Wolff and group will be here to entertain. CARD CLUB NEWS The Senior Citizens gather on Tuesday and Thursday following the REAL Services meals, in Walkerton to play cards. On Tuesdays they play euchre and on Thursdays they play pinochle. Feel free to join in the fun and games! Euchre winners were Thelma Dill with a 66; Marilyn Stull with 61; Doris DePoy with 60 and Ruth Ullery with 59. In pinochle first place went to Morris Searfoss with 722; Norma Brems, second with 661; Milner Capes, third with 625 and Martha Young, fourth with 596. LOCAL WRESTLERS COMPETE IN LARGEST MEET IN THE WORLD On Saturday, April 20th, three local wrestlers from the John Glenn area were in attendance at the Tournament of Champions, held in Columbus, Ohio. This tournament is billed as the largest one-day wrestling tournament in the world, featuring more than 2,000 entries from 27 states. Attending from our area were Joshua and Jeremiah Rizek and Andy King. Joshua’s class had 30 wrestlers entered and he advanced into the third round. Jeremiah’s class had 28 wrestlers in Cadet 200 and he lost a close decision in the championship match to finish second. Andy competed in Cadet 242 with 22 wrestlers participating and he advanced to the fourth round to finish seventh. All three wrestlers gained valuable experience and are looking forward to future competition. *♦* The Falcon Freestyle Wrestlers went to Lowell High School on Saturday, April 20. Those attending and placing were Jim Aldrich, fourth; Henry Lowry, third; Jason Lowry, second; William Borror, seventh; Matt Bogard, fifth; Andy Bogard, fourth and Eric Reese, third.
