For approximately one week, 19 high school students met with 22 elementary students and planned the writing activity which culminated in a book they prepared. The activity concluded with the JGHS students coming to NLES and all students participating enjoyed the books, a pizza lunch and tour of the Outdoor Lab. Mr. Richard Reese, principal of Urey Middle School, recognized on behalf of the Urey PTA the following students as Urey Citizens of the Month for March: Amanda Gulyanics, 7th grade daughter of Amy McDowell and George Gulyanics, and Jessie Roush, 7th grade daughter of Terry and Patty Roush. recognized for a recent commendation she received from the Argos Community Schools Library for her willingness to serve as judge for the Association for Indiana Media Educators District II Media Fair which was held on March 23 at Wilson Elementary School in South Bend. Students at Urey may participate in the Accelerated Reader Program sponsored by the Urey Media Center. The Young Hoosier Book Award Program is a state association to stimulate recreational reading among elementary and middle/junior high school children and to encourage cooperation between administrators, school media specialists and teachers in providing reading experiences for Indiana school children. Urey students earning 15 Accelerated Reader points during the third nine weeks and qualifying for the Urey Accelerated Reader Program were Shana Collier, Adam Mitschelen, Betsy Hummel, Emily King, Rachel Long, Claudia Bell, Kevin Clark, Brandi Davis, Alan Holland, Jason Kaiser, Jennifer Kemble, Nichole Radandt, Adalee Pairitz and Jason Barden. Students qualifying for the Young Hoosier Book Award Voting Function held on April 12, 1996 were Adalee Pairitz, Lindahl Wiegand, Nicole Radandt and Jennifer Kemble. Junior Achievement-Project Business consultants who are giving their time and professional information to UMS eighth grade social studies students were recognized.
