our surrounding area. She started her 15th year on Nov. 2nd and has thoroughly enjoyed it. Everyone had a wonderful time and looks forward to many more years. “SUPER SHOT” SATURDAY, APRIL 20 IN IND. & MICH. These days when University of Notre Dame women’s basketball coach Muffet McGraw says, “It’s the shot that counts,” she’s not talking baskets. She’s talking immunizations. As chairperson for the fourth annual “Super Shot Saturday,’’ coach McGraw’s words best sum up the importance of ageappropriate immunizations in preventing serious childhood diseases. And this year’s Super Shot Saturday immunization “blitz” will make it possible for children throughout a two county region to receive all the shots that count for free in Indiana. This year’s “Super Shot Saturday,” is April 20, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at seven sites in St. Joseph County and one in Marshall County. There are also five sites in Michigan’s Berrien County. Many parents think children don’t need vaccinations until they are ready for school. In fact, the first immunizations are given at birth before the child even leaves the hospital! Children are less able to fight serious diseases like measles, whooping cough, hepatitis or tetanus. Their chances of contracting any of these life-threatening ailments are greatly reduced if they receive the right immunization at the right

time. Super Shot Saturday, a project of the Communitywide Every Child By Two! committee of St. Joseph County, is an effort to help our community reach the Indiana State Department of Health’s “Goal 2000” to ensure that 90 percent of all children receive appropriate immunizations by the time they are two years old. In addition, all Super Shot sites will offer the appropriate immunizations for older children entering kindergarten or fifth/sixth grade at no cost. No appointment is necessary. However, parents must bring their child’s previous immunization records with them. For additional information you may call 800-578-7644. Sites: In Marshall County the site is the Marshall County Health Department, 112 W. Jefferson and some of the sites in South Bend include the St. Joseph County Health Department, downtown; Martin Luther King Center, 1522 Linden St.; Scottsdale Mall, Ireland and Miami and Indiana Health Center, 1909 Western Ave. *** When the site of the original Olympic Games was discovered in 1875, it inspired Baron Pierre de Coubertin, a French educator to organize a modern Olympics. He believed such an international competition would promote world peace. The first modern Olympic games took place in 1896. Put a little home into your house, subscribe to the Independent News.
