JAMES R. REED James R. Reed, 70, of 5138 Hamlin Court, South Bend, formerly of Walkerton, passed away at 10:15 a.m., on Monday, April 8, in his home. He was born on Sept. 26, 1925, in North Liberty. He married Audrey Finley on Jan. 26, 1944, in South Bend, who survives. He was the owner/operator of Reed’s Electric, in Walkerton. Also surviving are two sons, Kerry, of Bremen and Craig, of Cassopolis, Mich.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; his mother, Dorothy Reed, of North Liberty and a brother, Richard, of Three Oaks, Mich. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday at the North Liberty Church of Christ, of which he was a member, with burial in the Grovertown Cemetery. The Rannells Funeral Home, Koontz Lake Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion Post 189; Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1954; Moose Lodge 471, Plymouth and the Walkerton and Koontz Lake Lions Clubs. Memorial contributions may be made to the church. VENUS P. HATFIELD Venus P. Hatfield, 33, of 7740 N. County Road 925 East, Koontz Lake, formerly of New Buffalo, Mich., passed away at 10:45 a.m., on Saturday, April 6, in her home after an illness. She was born on November 8,1962, in the Philippines. She married William Hatfield, Jr., on August 11, 1995, in LaPorte, who survives. She was a data entry operator at Alliance Bank, New Buffalo, Mich. MARY JANE BEATY Mary Jane (Campbell) Beaty, 94, of 11959 Woodbine Lane, Koontz Lake, formerly of 1001 Tyler Street, Walkerton, passed away at 2:15 a.m., on Wednesday, April 3, in Maple Lawn Group Home, Inc. She was born on Dec. 28, 1901, in Roundhead, Ohio and lived in Walkerton since 1942. As Mary Jane Campbell she married S. Leonard Beaty on Nov. 11, 1922, in Niles, who preceded her in death on July 1, 1982. Mrs. Beaty retired from the Walkerton Schools as a teacher after 25 years of service and she also taught in Ohio. Surviving are three daughters, Mary Eleanor Freeland, of Las Cruces, New Mexico, Shirley Ann Roberts, of Canoga Park, California and Mildred Jean Cole, of Walkerton; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday at the Walkerton United Methodist Church with burial in Woodlawn Cemetery, Walkerton. The Nusbaum-Elkin Funeral Home, Walkerton, was in charge of the arrangements. She was past president of the Women’s Community Club, past matron of Order of Eastern Star Chapter 319, past mother adviser and one of the founders of Rainbow for Girls and was a graduate of Ball State University and Oxford College for Women and was a member of the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the church. VESTA V. DeCOUDRES Vesta V. DeCoudres, 86, of St. Paul’s Retirement Community, South Bend, formerly of North Liberty, passed away at 6:00 a.m., on Wed., April 3, in the nursing home. She was born on Feb. 20, 1910, in Sullivan, Ind., and lived in North Liberty most of her life. As Vesta Yager she married Fred DeCoudres, who preceded her in death on Dec. 22, 1971. She retired from the South Bend Community School Corp, as a teacher after 45 years of service. Surviving is a close friend, Mae Packer, of North Liberty and several cousins. M. Manuel Funeral Home, North Liberty with burial in the Johnson Cemetery, Sullivan. She was a member of the Women’s Society of Christian Service and the North Liberty United Methodist Church. KLINEDINST Orville John Klinedinst, 77, of 32574 Underwood Road, Walkerton, passed away at 7:10 p.m., on Tuesday, April 9, at his home following an illness. He was born on May 20, 1918, in Tyner and was a lifetime area resident. He married Neva Kilian on Dec. 4, 1937, in Plymouth, who survives. He retired in 1977 from Bendix Corp., South Bend, after 34 years of service. Also surviving is a son, Kenneth L., of Walkerton; two grandchildren and two sisters, Ocie Holderread, of Plymouth and Tessie Oman, of Cedar Lake. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday at the Walkerton United Methodist Church, of which he was a member, with Rev. Paul Mcßride, officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, Walkerton. Friends may call at the Nusbaum-Elkin Funeral Home, Walkerton from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m., on Thursday. He was a member of the Walkerton Masonic Lodge F & AM 619; Tyner IOOF Lodge 821; Scottish Rite Valley of South Bend and the Orak Temple Shrine, Michigan City. The Tyner IOOF Lodge will hold a memorial service at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home and this will be followed by a memorial service at 8:00 p.m. by the Walkerton Masonic Lodge. Tri Kappa News Walkerton’s Epsilon Chi chapter of Tri Kappa met on Thursday, April 4, for their regular monthly meeting, at the home of Cindy Keiper, Grovertown. Twenty-three members shared correspondence received from Province Officer Linda Gray, from Beta Gamma chapter, Mishawaka, concerning her March inspection of our chapter. Ideas were shared and a few suggestions were made. All in all, Epsilon Chi was commended for the active involvement throughout the community with all ages and in the State sponsored programs. Discussion was held concerning the October 4-6 Pumpkin Festival, to be held in Walkerton and the Junior Baseball League activities. The Tri Kappa Fine Arts and Crafts Festival will be
