Union Road, Walkerton, has been chosen out of 800 high school students in Illinois who was named recently as a “Golden Apple’’ Scholar, a recognition program for seniors sponsored by the not-for-profit Golden Apple Foundation
To be eligible for the “Family of the Year” honor, nominees must meet the following criteria: At least two members of the family must participate in or support youth baseball (league or scholastic level through high school). Family members must display extraordinary enthusiasm, dedication and support of youth baseball in their community. Family members must exhibit fair play and sportsmanship in their support of youth baseball.

She has worked for international organizations like Amnesty International, Women for Guatemala and the Ms. Foundation’s Take Your Daughter to Work Day and she belongs to the Burbank high school’s chapter of the National Honor Society. The Golden Apple award carries with it the chance for tuition reimbursements, opportunities for an organized program of professional mentoring, summertime jobs in teaching and the honor and recognition of being named a scholar. Kelly will attend DePauw University in the fall. She was one of 60 chosen from the state of Illinois. Pansy flowers are socalled from the French pensee, meaning “thought.”
