John Glenn School Board Minutes Regular And Executive Session CALL TO ORDER The Board of School Trustees of the John Glenn School Corporation met in regular session on Jan. 9, at 7:30 p.m., in the John Glenn High School. All members were present. The School Board, along with 16 observers, began the meeting with the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. APPROVAL OF MINUTES The School Board minutes for the Dec. 5, 1995 regular and executive session were approved by unanimous consent. APPROVAL OF CLAIMS A motion was made by Robert Schaeffer, seconded by Shirley Anderson, to approve claims numbered 2,343 through 2,518. The motion was approved by a seven to zero vote. 1. Approve John Glenn School Building Corporation payments A motion was made by Tom McCormick, seconded by David Gensinger, to approve John Glenn School Building Corporation payments in the amount of $852,023.52. The motion was approved by a seven to zero vote. PATRON RESPONSE 1. Cindy Leitch, Walkerton Elementary School PTA Cindy Leitch, representing WES PTA, spoke to the Board about installing crossing arm guards and motion censors on the school buses to prevent students from being run over by the bus. Mr. Keck responded that the crossing arms are not as effective as the motion detectors in preventing accidents. The School Board has gathered information in the past on the motion censor devices. The Board indicated they would give Mrs. Leitch’s request further consideration. RECOGNITIONS Mrs. Marilyn Lightfoot, principal of WES, announced that notification has been received from the State Department of Education that WES has been awarded $3,500 in incentive money due to improvement in ISTEP test scores. WES will be sponsoring an in-service training for three days in Feb. for a unique method of teaching reading called the “Herman Method” which was developed in California and shows good research in reversing reading failure. WSBT has honored two outstanding WES students: Rylan Hughes, grade five and Eric Reese, grade four. These students are on the Outstanding Honor Roll, participated on the winning Spell Bowl Team and are
interested and learning to excel in academics and sports. Mrs. Lightfoot asked the School Board to officially accept PTA contributions of $11,103.14 for 1994 and $3,060.03 for 1995. Mr. Richard Reese, principal of UMS, reported that the Urey students donated over 800 food items to the Food Pantry at the Walkerton Presbyterian Church prior to winter vacation. The student council, with Mrs. Francie Beville, sponsor, delivered the items in time for the holidays. The Urey PTA recently recognized the following students as UMS Students of the Month: November - Jessica Futa, 7th grade daughter of Rob and Brenda Futa, North Liberty, and Alan Holland, 7th grade son of Dennis and Linda Holland, Walkerton. December winners were Adalee Pairitz, Bth grade daughter of Jon and Tammy Pairitz, Walkerton, and James Haskins, Bth grade

son of Marie and Tom Kryder of North Liberty. On Jan. 3, Urey’s students and staff returned to classes after winter break to find the school’s cafeteria and kitchen open for use. The cafeteria seats approximately 200 students. The first phase of the building project is finished, which also includes Urey’s new teachers’ lounge and kitchen area. A special thanks should be given to school employees Brad Schmeltz, Wilma Huizenga, Phil Groves and Catherine Hahn who spent countless hours over the winter vacation in making sure these facilities were ready for student and staff use. Tentatively, the transition into the new building will take place during early March. Renovation and final construction on Urey should be completed by June 15, 1996. Walkerton Chamber of Commerce Civic Improvement Award for improvements at JGHS in 1995 The school board was informed that the Walkerton Chamber of Commerce recognized JGSC by presenting to the corporation the Civic Improvement Award for 1995 for improvements that were mede at John Glenn High School. NEW BUSINESS 1. Approve agreement between the Board of School Trustees of the JGSC and the John Glenn Education Association for 1995-97 Mr. McKee reported to the school board that the John Glenn Education Assoc, in a ratification meeting held this afternoon approved the tentative con-
tract agreement between the John Glenn Education Assoc, and the John Glenn Board of School Trustees. The new agreement is for a two-year period covering 1995 through 1997 school years. The agreement provides for a 3 percent increase on the salary schedule for the 1995-96 school year and a 3 percent increase on the salary schedule for the 1996-97 school year. In addition, the agreement provides for a IVz percent increase on the extracurricular schedule for each year of the contract. A number of extracurricular positions were added with adjustments in the base pay to some of other extracurricular positions. Severance pay is increased for unused sick leave days from S3O to S4O, years of service pay from S6O to $75, and a reduction in years of qualifying service from 20 to 16 over the two-year period.
