Falcons Lose Heartbreaker To Riley The John Glenn Falcons lost a heartbreaker to South Bend Riley on Saturday night, 62-61. This puts the Falcons at 3-2. Glenn was overwhelmed in the first period by Riley’s Joel Gates who had 10 points and seven rebounds to his credit to end the first period 19-23. The Falcons slowly chipped away to a 34-32 lead in the second period but then Riley’s Cephus Phillips came alive with seven straight possessions to give the Wildcats an advantage over the Falcons by only two points, 37-35 at halftime. The game remained close throughout the second half with the third period ending 52-47. In the final period,

the Falcons worked on the Cats to come within two with 4:43 left in the game. Helping in this situation was the four fouls on Phillips who had to sit on the bench for a time. A basket in the fourth by Nick Medich would have tied the game at 57 all but Medich was called for a charge and the basket waved off with the clock showing 2:28 remaining. Phillips hit a three pointer and added two free throws to give the Cats an edge that they never lost not even through the efforts of Jake Neiswender and Corey Rough. Leading the scoring for Glenn was Brian Lyle with 16 and Neiswender had 14 points for the only other double figure help. Riley was led by Phillips with 22 points and Kelvin Winbush and Joel Gates each with 12 points apiece for the onepoint victory. The Falcons will play at South Central on Saturday night before they get ready for the Plymouth Holiday Classic, set for Dec. 19 and 20. The junior-varsity portion of the Holiday Classic begins on Dec. 18, at Plymouth. Lubelski 6 points; Steve Ruby 5 points; Brett Hulse and Steve Goss with 2 points each. The win evened Glenn’s record at 2 wins and 2 defeats. Saturday night Glenn traveled to Jackson School to take on a strong South Bend Riley team. Glenn played well for a half, falling behind just before halftime, 26-19. Lubelski led the Falcons with 8 first half points, but the Wildcats held him scoreless the final two quarters.
