WHA T IS CHRISTMAS? What is Christmas and what does it mean to you? Ask this question of a million people and you will receive about a million different answers that could fill a book. Christmas may mean a time of giving . . . and also receiving gifts from loved ones, friends and for the many, many youngsters, that all important once a year visit from the one and only Santa Claus. Maybe it means a holiday from school for some, a vacation from college to be with the family and friends, or maybe a vacation to another part of the country for you and your family as many will be traveling to “grandmother’s house.” 'Maybe it will mean a time of family reunion as relatives spend the holidays with each other. Maybe it means the time to send greetings or that letter to friends and neighbors. Maybe it means a time to join in the crowds to do Christmas shopping, to get in the crowded spirit of the commercial part of Christmas. Maybe it means that one time of the year when business flourishes. Maybe it means a party or a series of parties that will be a big part of the season. Maybe it is just relaxing at home with the family or among friends as the holiday season passes without much special attraction. • Maybe it is the time that everyone should attend a church service to help celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Maybe it is the time to be a part of a Christmas program that brings much joy to those participating. Maybe it is the time to sing the beautiful carols of Christmas telling their story in song. Maybe it is a special time of the year when a family in need makes that little extra effort to brighten their lives at the holiday time. Maybe it is the time when a lonely person will be on the outside looking in as they are forgotten at this happy time of the year. Maybe it is just almost like another day as one must labor, in his particular field or vocation. These many things will all be a part of someone’s Christmas. Can you do something to add to the Christmas of some of the less fortunate, the lonely, the suffering, the invalid, the forgotten, or just the family? This is the time of the year more than any when one thinks of helping someone else, to brighten their way just a little. Maybe it can be done with just a greeting card, a small present, a long distance or local phone call, a short visit, a chance to get out, a visit to a church or some other way that would take very little time or sacrifice. The meaning of this could be a tremendous lift to that “other person.” A gift such as this is a gift that will not only aid the one receiving, but will also brighten the life of the giver. This is the type of gift that cannot be replaced by any value of money. It is a gift from the heart that can mean more than stationary things in life. Years ago in a little town called Bethlehem, a gift was given to each and everyone of us. This gift was given to us by God. The gift, of course, was in the form of a man ... a man who was put on this earth to teach, preach and suffer, and finally give himself for us. This type of gift can never again be given and is not expected. However, the spirit of this gift can be given by each and everyone of us every day in everything we do. Take time this holiday season to make this gift a part of your life ... and let it live with you not only at Christmas time, but all through the year, this and every other year. This type of gift will reflect more on yourself as it reflects on others and will return a feeling which can never be matched.
