It would cost approximately $35,000.00 to install a 911 monitor here. At one time the County Council had said they were going to put a monitor here, but changed their mind. The 911 system is funded by charges made on everyone’s phone bills, and the St. Joseph County system receives all of those fees. If we had a monitor in Walkerton, our calls would no longer have to be routed through the County but would show up here on our own monitor. Pres. Rizek said that the Town Council wants Walkerton citizens to know that there is a 911 system here, and it is good to teach children 911. She added that, for an adult, it is a whole lot faster to call our dispatch at 586-3511 for police, fire or ambulance. Anyone who chooses, can still call 911, but it would be faster in Walkerton to call our dispatch. Sobieralski said that he
needs another part-time dispatcher and asked the Council to approve the hire of Jenny Moore. Moore is a dispatcher for Marshall County Sheriffs Dept, and a part-time dispatcher for the Plymouth Police Dept. Reese made the motion to approve, seconded by Hartsell, carried. Officer Eikelberg would like to attend a six-week school next year and it was agreed that he can use vacation time and accumulated time in order to attend. Sobieralski reported that our back up generator broke down and the cost to repair it is approximately $1,200.00. The generator is quite old. The cost to replace it would be about $5,000.00. Reese made the motion to replace the generator with the expense being paid from Cumulative Capital Improvement, Police, Fire, Ambulance, Electric, Wastewater and

Motor Vehicle Highway. Seconded by Hartsell, carried. Mary Rollings reported that the ambulance service has been very busy, almost two calls a day. They have been checking into putting cellular phones into each of the rigs at a cost of $25.00 a month. The phones would be programmed with only the hospital’s numbers. Using cellular phones would provide some privacy for a patient’s condition. A question had come up concerning reimbursal contracts for those who take an EMT class and then drop out. After completing an EMT school, the EMT is supposed to work for our service for one year. A person who drops out of a class is supposed to reimburse the Town for the class fee. The Council reviewed a report listing those who completed the course but did not work for (Continue Next Week) the church in the fellowship hall.
