THANKSGIVING — 1995 The Pilgrim Fathers who came to the American shores in 1620 seeking freedom and an opportunity to worship God according to the dictates of conscience, did not find a land of “milk and honey,” instead they found hardships and trials in a new land which offered resistance to their coming. And yet, in spite of all their hardships, they felt that a Kind Providence had watched over them and they had much to be tankful for. While conditions here in America today are not all that we might wish them to be, yet we, too, like the Pilgrims, have much to be thankful for. Thanksgiving is traditionally the time to be grateful for the things with which we have been blessed. Take time out and think of the many things for which you yourself are blessed with. Many of us however, may not know how to properly count our blessings. Some appreciate things that they own such as their car, home, etc. and other things we take for granted. We have a great heritage as Christians. We have a great opportunity to do good in this life upon earth for ourselves and for others. We know there is a higher purpose —a greater meaning —to our existence.

We know that God forgives our human fralities. For this, we should be grateful — and we should be appreciative enough to do the right thing when we are faced with the opportunity to forgive others. As we gather about our family table on Thanksgiving Day, let us take time to breathe a word of thanks for all the blessings which are ours. The first official Thanksgiving Day was proclaimed by President Abraham Lincoln on November 28, ^j!B63.

Here in Indiana, the Department of Veterans Affairs, along with the Disabled American Veterans (DAV); the American Legion (AL); the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW); American Veterans (AmVets) and the Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA), special recognition was given to women veterans of the past, present and future.
