was shining brightly as they won the Div. 3 State Spell Bowl Championship, in Indianapolis. With a score of 85 out of 90 words, the ten Glenn spellers edged Garrett and Austin’s 83 points at Warren Central High School, in Indy. This was the school’s seventh Div. 3 State Championship in the last nine years, and its 10th consecutive trip to the state finals. Glenn did not take the lead until the fifth round and then showed poise by hanging on to a one-point lead over Garrett throughout the remainder of the competition, with Garrett missing its fourth word in the 10th and final round to give the team some breathing room. Five perfect scores of nine were earned by Gail Ferency, Kari Kissinger, Stephanie Holderread, Sarah Martin and Debbie Lichtenbarger. With only one miss, a score of eight, were Mellisa Lung, Holly Gouker, Yvonne Schmeltz, Ruth Cleveland

and Kristy Marks. The team also got all 10 of its tie-breaker words, the most difficult words ill the competition, correct. The team reacted differently to being State Champions. Stephanie Holderread felt “awesome; I’m still in shock.” In her third trip to state, Kari Kissinger said, “It has felt good to make it to state in the past, but to win it feels great.” Yvonne Schmeltz proudly said, ‘‘lt feels unrealistic, but I know it’s not. It feels good to be able to say that I’m a State Champion, when I know that very few people ever get that chance.” Sarah Martin credited “our teamwork and - the way we supported each other that brought us over the top to win.” For senior Debbie Lichtenbarger, the only student left from the school’s last championship team three year’s ago, the win was especially memorable: “We won State my freshman year and now my senior year, so it feels good to have come in as a state champion and leave as a state champion.” “I am so proud of this team,” said Coach Paul Hernandez. “They made the biggest improvement from Regionals to State of any team I’ve coached. Regional, I could see they were determined to improve and they worked very hard. They also matured and showed great poise and concentration. I’m thrilled and happy for them, the school and the community.” The team members also got to spray Hernandez’s hair pink and ; green glitter his beard at school as part of a bet in winning the state title. Sarah Martin remarked that . she would never forget “the J look on your face while we I sprayed your hair.” The team was awarded a state plaque, individual pins to , the team members and a ( championship banner to be hung in the school. In the other enrollment divisions, Bloomington South won Div. 1 for the fourth time with a perfect score of 90; in Div. 2 Princeton won its seventh title with a score of 89 and in Div. 4, Northeast Dubois earned its fourth title with an 85. The 30 top teams in the state, determined by the top scores in each enrollment division at Regional, out of the 236 teams who competed earned the trip to Indy.
