VOICE OF THE PEOPLE
“Trick or Treat” Another year of Halloween has come and gone. Everyone seemed to have enjoyed themselves greatly. I was very disappointed to see a child I was giving candy to was not able to do so. She had to hand out campaign flyers for an adult as she collected her candy for Halloween. This is sad to see that she was missing out on the total privilege of being a kid and Halloween. There is a time, place and way to do political cam-

paigns, Halloween is not one of them. This is an adult subject and should not be put on such young children’s shoulders. One day they will be too old to trick or treat and will have all the worries of the world on them. So let them have their time as we all did and let politics for now be left up to us, the adult. Betsy Marek ROLL-A-TURKEY I thought that I had seen everything, then I went to the Turkey Bowl at Ray and Kenny’s last Saturday. I had a personal invitation from Carl, who told me to show up or else. When my
friendly grocer tells me to do something, I do it, most of the time and anyway this time I did! The bowl was in progress when I arrived. Some bowlers had hit one of the pins, a bottle of Coke and had spattered the gallery with the sticky gooey stuff. It was a good thing that it wasn’t me tossing the turkey, I would have aimed for Carl. It proceeded until three winners were awarded gift certificates for groceries. Maybe next year, I should enter, legally. Anyway, when the official bowl was over I was allowed to toss the bird, I got a strike and was awarded one of the bottles of pop. I’m still afraid to open it. The contestants were given sacks of groceries. It was a fun time and it is generous of Ray and Kenny’s to hold this annual event. I understand that the turkey used for the ball will be served at Ray and Kenny’s Christmas dinner. A TTENTION SNOW BIRDS! A * wait... DON’T FLY THE COOP YET! Remember that breakfast will be served at St. Pat’s on Nov. 19. This time the boys will also be serving french toast along with or instead of pancakes. Anytime that men are cooking and cleaning up the mess, I am willing to eat. So keep that date open. Another date to remember is the 11th of Dec. That is the Chamber of Commerce Christmas meeting and dinner. Also for Business & Professional Women your meeting date is Nov. 16 at the IOOF Hall. I have a date with a very nice man today, we are going to the card party at Al’s Diner, at Koontz Lake. Remember if you want to play cards on Tuesday, come on out. Official starting time is 1 p.m., but you should be there by noon. We eat fast. My date? Phil Waldron. Sincerely, Nedra Williams November 6, 1995 Attention: John Glenn School Board I am Jan Hayes, President of the John Glenn Education Association. I want to express the teachers’ dissatisfaction over the board’s current inability and unwillingness to negotiate a fair contract with the teachers. We started bargaining in May with a wonderful dinner. Thank you, Mr. McKee, and board members. If and when we settle, we, the John Glenn Education Association, would like to reciprocate.. We ask only for a fair settlement. What the board has offered and continues to steadfastly hold to is not acceptable to us. Teachers will not and cannot afford to settle for what you are offering. We are looking at an inflation rate of almost 3 percent, the local schools in our UniServ District (Culver, Plymouth, Union-North, Bremen, Triton, etc.) have averaged

settlements of almost 4 percent. It is hard to believe that the John Glenn School Corpoation cannot offer a salary increase commensurate with the other area schools, especially when this corporation had a cash balance of 1.6 million dollars last December. According to a survey done by JGEA, the teachers in this corporation not only give unselfishly of their time to support activities that enrich our students’ lives but also give monetarily. The survey results showed that the John Glenn teachers spent almost $25,000 out of their own pockets to provide classroom materials during the last school year. Tomorrow night, we will go into another mediation session. Hopefully, this time both sides will emerge with a settlement we both can live with. Until then, please keep in mind the many dedicated and unselfish teachers that this school corporation has working for it. In closing, I would like to state that I can remember a time when the administration/school board felt that it really wasn’t the brick and mortar that made a school, but the teachers. While a balance of both must be maintained, let’s not build the schools on the backs or at the expense of the teachers. Thank you. (Note: This letter was read to the John Glenn School Board on October 17. Mediation was not successful on October 18. A third mediation session has been scheduled fpr November 27. A fair contract settlement is all the John Glenn teachers are asking!)
