The .egion Corner ^Editor’s Note: This speech /as given by Joe Mayne, National Commander of the ons of The American Legion on March 5, 1995 in ensacola, Florida, at the Jepartment of Florida High chool Oratorical Contest inals.) । “There’s some strange ien in town. They often ather in a bar. Sometimes ley are uncomfortably >ud. Sometimes they are rangely quiet. We don’t know much bout them. They seem to jme from a different time, hey remember friends long sad by marching in arades . . . standing k aveside in small meteries wearing uniforms (at don’t always fit. - They go to these graves |en when its raining and »ld and even when no one se is there. Two or three men fire d guns in honor of ghting men who tmetimes aren’t even iried there. They do this the commands of a •mrade . . . even these “bmmands seem out of ace to everyone but these ^ange men. We see them sometimes Irrying the Flag at our gh school football games, ley seem too serious Hout carrying the colors. most like someone died: ~ They wear strange caps, aey gather at a bar. I jmder if they go there to -J member or do they go ere to forget. You’ll see these men snap ! attention when the Flag mes by in a parade. If u look closely you may b a tear in that man’s eye. At the Veterans Park ?y’ll go and touch the bmorial . . here . . tears ain. Strange men. |lf these unusual men are inembering battles and ends or living with the :mory of horrors and ath that Hollywood can’t en come close to itating, then why do they !y the band uniforms for lr school's marching nd? Why do they put on Boys id Girls State? Why do fy give money to scholorps and donate time and t tre dollars to the Veterans >mes and VA Hospitals? by do they sponsor Boy _ outs? Why do they spon- ■ baseball teams? Why they give blood, buy fire cks and build parks and ch child safety and suprt drug education? Why they want us to learn to :ak so eloquently at an ‘torical competition on : United States Conution? t’s because they have ight for freedom. They 'w that freedom is not e. They live everyday

with the memory of battle and sacrifice. They know that if we don’t always watch out for our freedoms, someone will take them, even from inside our own country. While you are thinking of prom and honor society and student council and band and what college to go to, these strange men had to put that on hold to fight and die and protect our Constitution so we could go to the prom and graduate and pledge allegiance and speak on the Constitution so eloquently. These strange men know that protecting the Constitution doesn’t always have to be done on a bloody battlefield. So by instilling in us the values of freedom and liberty and encouraging us to be superior communicators when it comes to our Constitution, you and I will protect it. First with our words and even with our lives. I commend all of you for participating in this Department of Florida Oratorical Competition. I hope I have given you some insight in to these strange men called Legionnaires. Also referred to some as Heroes.” Bowling Monday Night Ladles October 16,1995 Shady Lanes 20 4 Reflections by Karen 16 8 Mouse’s Barber Shop 9 15 Ross Engineering 3 21 High team series: Shady Lanes 2565, Reflections by Karen <4 2518, Ross Engineering & Machine, Inc. 2465. A workman had climbed a steep ladder and was perched precariously on the rim of the city hall clock. He was cleaning the huge dial when a passerby stopped to watch. “What’s wrong with the clock?” he demanded to know. “It’s fine,” replied the workman. “I’m just nearsighted.” Happy Ads Only $2.50 IEMS A ■& an* ms f | WANT AKp _| SYE' ■
