All members were present. The school board, along with approximately 30 observers, began the meeting with the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. APPROVAL OF MINUTES The school board minutes for the Oct. 3, 1995 regular session were approved by unanimous consent. APPROVAL OF CLAIMS A motion was made by Ben Smith, seconded by Robert Schaeffer, to approve claims numbered 1860 through 1955. The motion was approved by a seven to zero vote. PATRON RESPONSE Jan Hayes, president of the John Glenn Education Assoc., addressed the school board concerning the lack of progress being made in negotiations between the school board and the John Glenn Education Assoc. A written copy of her comments is on file with the board minutes. RECOGNITIONS David McKee, superintendent, presented Marilyn Lightfoot, principal of Walkerton Elementary, with a framed certificate and pin from the Indiana School Principals Assoc, recognizing Mrs. Lightfoot for 25 years of service as principal of WES.

Mr. Shuler, principal at John Glenn High School, announced that the 1995 JGHS Spell Bowl Team placed first at the regional Hoosier Spell Bowl competition held at John Glenn High School. John Glenn scored 76 points out of apossible 90. Competition involves 10 spellers each spelling nine words. The top eight teams across the state of Indiana are then selected for the state championship competition held on Nov. 11 in Indianapolis. The JGHS Spell Bowl Team has been selected and was the number two selection behind Garrett High School which scored 80 points. Congratulations with wishes of good luck at state finals were extended to the Spell Bowl Team and coach Paul Hernandez for their excellent job. The JGHS Falcon Pride Pa.^ and directors Dan Fortlander and Cathy Burnett were recognized for the first place rating received in regional competition at Carmel High School. The band did not qualify for state competition held in the Hoosier Dome, but the did perform extremely well. Joe Pletcher, JGHS senior, recently competed at the state tennis championship. Although defeated in state competition, he is the first JGHS tennis player to reach the state level of competition. Mr. Shuler congratulated both Joe and tennis coach Bruce Fleming. Mr. Reese, principal at Urey Middle School, reported that the Urey 7th grade volleyball team captured their tournament title by defeating Knox in the first game and then going on to defeat LaVille in the championship match. The Falcon 500 Club was recognized and thanks expressed for their $350 donation for UMS football athletic equipment. The UMS band and choir students will participate in the Music department Fall Concert at North Liberty Elementary on Oct. 23. Parents, friends and

community were invited to enjoy an evening of voval and instrumental performances. On Oct. 24, the Urey Middle School Spell Bowl Team will compete in the area spell bowl at Bremen Middle School. Urey’s team is composed of approximately 15 students and is coached by Mr. Andy Stegemiller. A motion was made by Tom McCormick, seconded by David Gensinger, to approve the $350 donation from the Falcon Club to Urey Middle School. The motion was approved by a seven to zero vote. coach Shirley Anderson made a motion, seconded by Janice Ryan, to approve the appointments as listed. The motion was approved by a six to zero to one vote with Tom McCormick abstaining. REPORTS 1. Superintendent’s Report The superintendent reported to the school board that work has begun on school board policy revision. He advised the board that there would be a considerable amount of time invested on their part and the administration in reviewing and developing new school board policies. Dr. Hughes is planning on meeting with the school board following the Nov. 21 board meeting to review policies pertaining to school board bylaws. NEXT MEETING DATL The Board of School Trustees will meet in regular session at 7:30 p.m. on November 7, 1995 at North Liberty Elementary School. ADJOURNMENT The meeting adjourned at 7:53 p.m. EXECUTIVE SESSION An executive session for the purposes of discussing strategy with respect to collective bargaining and the purchase of real property by the school board was held following the regular session.
