Time Changes For Some Os Us! The last Sunday in October marks the date for the turning back of time, one hour to Standard Time, across most of the United States. Exempt is most of Indiana. Residents in Walkerton and North Liberty and surrounding areas will remain on Eastern Standard Time. We will be coordinated with New York, instead of Chicago. LaPorte County and those west to the Illinois state line will move their clocks backward for the next five months, until the first Sunday in April. Also noted will be the prime time TV programming will be one-hour later than we are accustomed to. Fire Prevention Should Be An Everyday Practice Fire Prevention should be recognized everyday of the year! Carelessness has no boundaries. No one can predict when or where the next tragic fire will happen. That’s why it’s important that we all do our jobs and practice fire prevention in every way. Make it your business to look for fire hazards in the home, on your property and where you work! Dry conditions and very strong gusts of wind helped spark two fires last Tuesday in our area. The winds were clocked as high as 30 miles per hour that caused two trash fires to spread and do alot of damage. A fire at around 1:30 p.m., on Tuesday, Oct. 17, north of North Liberty, began from a trash barrel at a home on State Road 23, a half mile south of New Road, that blew into a field causing several acres of damage and the possibility of a dozen homes being treatened. Over 100 volunteer firemen from 12 departments fought this blaze. The fire was contained before it could destroy any of the homes in the area but did damage several storage outbuildings along New Road and 23. Another fire destroyed 40 acres of premium Frazier firs and white pines at the Hensler Tree Farm, in Starke County, last Tuesday. The farm is located one and a half miles northeast of Oregon-Davis High School and is known for producing about 300,000 Christmas trees annually. This fire also started from a trash fire at a neighboring home. The dense smoke forced the closure of the road to Oregon-Davis School for a time. In St. Joseph County there is a law on the books prohibiting open burning of any kind without a permit. Even though a total of 31.11 inches of rainfall has been recorded for the year as of last week, there was very little rainfall since Oct. Ist. If) I I Fix any faulty wiring immediately; empty trash regularly; avoid build ups around possible fire traps; keep heating and cooking equipment in top repair and be sure to store old oily rags in metal containers. Make sure you and everyone in your family knows what to do in a fire emergency . . . before it happens. Play it smart ... be fire safe! Fire Prevention Week was first proclaimed by President Warren G. Harding in 1922, in commemorating the “Great Chicago Fire of 1871 in which 250 people were killed, 100,000 left homeless and more than 17,400 buildings were destroyed. Since then, the National Fire Prevention Association along with the support of the fire service, schools and civic organizations across the country have sponsored Fire Prevention Week in order to draw public attention to the devastating effects of fire and the importance of fire preven-

tion. Being prepared in the event of a fire is vital. People often become confused when they discover a fire and the home in which they live can become unfamiliar. Devise a home escape plan with two ways out of each room being made so that family members can react more quickly in the event of a fire. Check your smoke detectors or alarms regularly to be sure that the batteries are in good working order. Remember being prepared for survival and basic fire prevention measures are very important. If your clothing catches on fire remember to stop, drop and roll and if you are caught in a smoke filled room, crawl low and try and escape the fire. A startling statistic is that a fire breaks out in a home every 45 seconds in the United States.
