VOICE OF THE; PEOPLE
“Teachers Contract” Since May, the teachers have been negotiating a contract for the 1995-96 school year. Presently, a mediator is working with the bargaining teams of both the teachers and the school board. There has been very little progress in these discussions. We, as members of this community, should be concerned with these talks. The future of our children is greatly influenced by our teachers. Not only do the students view our educators as experts in their areas of concentration but as individuals who encourage good decision-making, compassion for others, and dedication/commitment to achieving aspirations. The state has alloted the John Glenn School Corporation enough money to give our teachers approximately a 5% increase in salary. The school corporation has decided to only allow 1.5% increase. Why? Is it fair to keep the teachers from having equal spending strength as the previous year? With inflation at 3.1% and only 1.5% increase in salary, our teachers will be losing much ground. Why is it fair to keep the teachers from obtaining what the state has deemed fair? Are the local officials implying the teachers are not worthy? A Concerned Educator, Parent and Taxpayer
