Make Halloween A Safe And Fun Night Halloween is a fantasy night for youngsters, as they go from door-to-door in costumes and masks seeking treats and promising harmless tricks if they go away emptyhanded. But the threat of more dangerous tricks, man-made and accidental, is a reality that can turn the fantasy into a nightmare for children and their parents. Halloween at first was filled with superstitions; however, today it has become a time for fun and merriment. In America, Halloween is the children’s festival. Boys and girls dress up in funny attire, to “trick or treat,” attend parties and even have parades. By taking a few simple precautions, many of these accidents can be prevented. For these reasons, the National Commission on Children and Youth of the American Legion Auxiliary is in total support of Halloween as a "Safe and Fun Day or Night.” Locally, Orville Easterday Unit 189 of the American Legion Auxiliary, Walkerton, suggests the following thoughts. Children should wear costumes light in color, non-flammable and short enough to prevent stumbling. Costumes should be decorated with reflective tape or bands. Special warning is made to motorists to use extreme caution on trick-or-treat day. Warn against the wearing of masks because they restrict vision. Colorful make-up may be used as a substitute and is more creative. If your area has trick-or-treat after dark, advise children to carry a flashlight. If a pumpkin is carried, it should be lit with a flashlight, not a candle. Suggest visits to be confined to your children’s neighborhood. Urge parents and other adults to accompany their children. Children should wait until they get home to sample their treats. Urge neighbors and others to give children ONLY wrapped or sealed treats. Residents who wish to participate should keep their porch lights on and advise children to call only at lighted homes. Lastly, the National Safety Council . advises the basic pedestrial rules: 1. Cross only at corners, never between parked cars, never diagonally cross an intersection; 2. Look in all directions before crossing the street; 3. Watch for and obey all traffic lights; 4. Walk, never run, across the street; 5. Use sidewalks, not streets, for walking; 6. Wait on the curb, not in the street, until the street is clear to cross. By following a few common sense suggestions, perhaps your or our community will have a “Safe and Fun Day or Night.” Orville Easterday Unit 189 American Legion Auxiliary Walkerton HALLOWEEN PARTY ‘ The Koontz Lake Association will be holding a Halloween Party, on Saturday, October 28, from 5 to 7:00 p.m., at the Koontz Lake Assoc, clubhouse located at 10870 East Cherokee. During the evening hay rides, games, treats and a bonfire are planned. 2t026
