The Walkerton Evangelical United Brethren Church, formerly the United Brethren in Christ, was found by Rev. J. D. Coverstone and had 11 members when he came to the charge, then consisting of Walkerton, Tyner, Teegarden Gilead and the Island Churches. The old Baptist Church across the Nickle Plate tracks was used as a place of worship. Rev. Sammy Snyder held special meetings in 1884 and built up the church. In 1901 Rev. S. H. Yeager came to the charge and the church then had 87 members. Rev Yeager held revivals and added 100 members to the roll. During Rev Yeager’s ministry the present building was built in 1903 at a cost of $8,000.00 with much donated labor. W. H. Bast was the architect and Ernest Leibole the carpenter. Trustees were John Bellinger, Etsel Snyder, David Swank, James P. Taylor and Arthur Williams. Bishop Bell dedicated the church on April 24, 1904. The present parsonage was built under the ministry of Rev. J. C. Albright in 1925. Many pastors and peoples served through the years to build and maintain the church and buildings. Some of the more recent pastors were J. W. Borkert 1933-35; J. W. Miller, 1936-1938; L. E. Eaton, 1939^0; Rev. F. A Risley’ 1940-41; and upon his death, Mrs. Elta Risley continued as pastor until 1947; Rev. Cecil Smith, 1947-48; and the Rev. V. L. Garner came to the work in 1948 serving the church for many years. The church was remodeled and refinished and is still being improved. The membership in 1956 was 262.
