Jr. Miss Ladies Practice-Practice 8& PRACTICE Pictured above is Rachel Lichtenbarger at the piano and Season Hendricks as she practices her song she intends to sing as her creative and performing arts. Monday found all seventeen girls putting finishing touches on their necessary paperwork and completing forms detailing their plans for individual creative and performing arts for this year’s program. Practices will continue through October with the final performance and competition slated for Saturday, October 28 at 7:00 p.m. in the John Glenn High School Auditorium. Three John Glenn High School senior girls participating in the Walkerton Junior Miss Scholarship program were asked the question of the week which was: “What, if anything, have you gained, thus far, by being a participant in Walkerton’s Junior Miss?’’ Jennifer Keck answered, “Friends.” Tanya Cain responded, “Keeping an open mind on trying new things.” And Tish Jacobson remarked, “Confidence - plus another speeding ticket!” All seventeen girls are finding the Junior Miss atmosphere fun, exciting and rewarding. Please support this year’s program by attending the 1995 Walkerton Junior Miss Scholarship Program on October 28th. Hope to see you there! VOLLEYBALL INVITATIONAL SET FOR SAT., OCT. 14 The Urey seventh and eighth grade volleyball teams will host an Invitational, on Saturday, October 14, beginning at 9:00 a.m., at the Urey Middle School gym. Other schools invited are LaVille, South Central and Knox. Tickets are $2.00 for students and $3.00 for adults. A concession stand will be open with hot dogs, potato chips, | sweet rolls, pop, coffee, etc., available in the kitchen. The opening matches will pit LaVille and South Central, 7th grade teams at 9 a.m. followed by the Urey vs. Knox 7th grade teams matches. The Bth grade teams of Knox and Urey will then square off followed by the LaVille and South Central Bth graders games. The championships will be held in the afternoon. Mirth is like a flash of lightning that breaks through a gloom of clouds and glitters for a moment; cheerfulness keeps up a kind of daylight in the mind and fills it with steady and perpetual serenity.

John Glenn To Host Spell Bowl Competition Oct. 16 The 11th annual Hoosier Spell Bowl competition for senior high teams will be held on Monday, October 16. John Glenn High School will host one of the regional sites for 14 area schools. Competing in Division 1 at Glenn will be South Bend John Adams, LaSalle, Mishawaka, Penn and Riley; in Division 2, New Prairie, Plymouth, Tippecanoe Valley and South Bend Washington; in Division 3, Bremen, John Glenn and Rochester and in Division 4, Caston and Triton. The competition will take place in the gymnasium and will begin at 6 p.m. Admission is free and the public is invited to attend. The Spell Bowl is a team competition in which teams of 10 spellers from 230 schools in the state will compete at 19 Regional sites throughout Indiana on the evening of Oct. 16. Each team competes only directly against other teams within one of four enrollment divisions. A percentage of schools competing in each enrollment division from all the regional competitions will be invited to compete in Indianapolis on Saturday, Nov. 11, for the State Finals. The top eight qualifiers in Div. 1 (61 schools), Div. 2, (63 schools) and Div. 3 (59 schools), and the top six qualifiers in Div. 4 (47 schools) will go to State. The John Glenn Spell Bowl team will be attempting to qualify for their 10th consecutive trip to the State Finals in the 11 year history of the Spell Bowl competition. The team has been working twice a week after school since the beginning of September to master the 3,500 word list from which the competition words are chosen. The John Glenn team members are Debbie Lichtenbarger, Sarah Martin, Kristy Marks, Stephanie Holderread, Ruth Cleveland, Yvonne Schmeltz, Kari Kissinger, Gail Ferency, Mellisa Lung and Holly Gouker. The team alternates are Mary Pflugshaupt, Rhen Taylor, Andy Schmeltz, Casey Butler and Shawn Alspaugh. “The students are all very capable and have been studying hard,” said coach Paul Hernandez. “Our goal is to score as high as we can to qualify for the State Finals.” Past John Glenn Spell Bowl teams have earned two 2nds, one 4th and six Div. 3 State Championships. STARKE COUNTY COLLEGE FAIR OCT. 19 AT O.D.H.S. This year, Oregon-Davis High School will be the location of the annual Starke County College Fair. The fair will be held on Thursday, October 19, in the gymnasium, from 10:30 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Knox and North Judson-San Pierre High School, along with Oregon-Davis will participate in the fair. Approximately 30 colleges will be attending the fair including Ancilla, Purdue North-Central, 1.U.5.8., Bethel, Valparaiso, Vincennes, Sait Mary’s, to name a few. Also planning to attend the fair are representatives from the Air Force, Army, Navy and Marines. Parents are invited to attend the fair and speak with representatives from the institutions present. Juniors and Seniors from the Starke County Schools will be filtering in throughout the time period. This is a wonderful opportunity to gather more information on career choices and education/training necessary to pursue those goals!

Monica Vink To Attend National Conference Miss Monica Vink, of Plymouth, has been selected to attend the National Young Leaders Conference, from Oct. 17 to 22, in Washington, D.C. The National Young Leaders Conference is a unique leadership development program for high school students who have demonstrated leadership potential and scholastic merit. Monica is a junior at John Glenn High School and will be among the 350 outstanding national scholars attending the conference from across America. The theme of the conference is, “The Leaders of Tomorrow Meeting the Leaders of Today.” Throughout the six-day conference, Monica will interact with key leaders and newsmakers from the three branches of government, the media and the diplomatic corps. Highlights of the program include welcoming remarks from the Floor of the United States House of Representatives and a panel discussion with prominent journalists at the National Press Gub. Scholars will visit foreign embassies and receive policy briefings from senior government officials. Monica may also meet with her Representative or an appointed member of their staff to discuss important issues facing the area and the nation. To complement these special meetings and briefings, Monica will participate in a number of leadership skill-building activities. In one activity, “If I Were President,” students role-play the President, members of the cabinet and representatives from Capitol Hill who must respond to an international crisis involving North Korea. Culminating the conference is the “Mock Congress,” in which scholars assume the roles of United States Representatives by debating, amending and voting on proposed legislation on crime. The National Young Leaders Conference is sponsored by the Congressional Youth Leadership Council, a nonprofit, nor partisan educational organization. Founded in 1985, the Council is committed to “fostering and inspiring young people to achieve their full leadership potential.” Over 300 members of the United States Congress join this commitment as members of the Council’s Honorary Congressional Board of Advisors. Each year, only 7,000 outstanding youth nationwide may participate in the 20 sessions of the National Young Leaders Conference. “The conference provides the opportunity for students, like Monica, to distinguish themselves as

FUND DRIVE TO BEGIN The John Glenn Music Dept, announces the beginning of their annual cheese and sausage fund raiser beginning on Wednesday, October 18 and continuing through October 30th. Once again the Music Dept, will use Century Pride products. Century Pride has a quality and variety filled line of food products to enhance holiday entertaining. Students in the Music Dept, will have the incentive to earn prizes for their sales efforts. There is a cash award for the top sales person, a money raffle, product prizes and also a program for high school students to earn money for future travel. This is a fund raiser that provides for the Music Dept., both instrumental and choral, grades 6 through 12. Some of the items that this help to provide include: uniforms, flags, contest entry fees, music and instruments. It is with your support that the Music Dept, in the John Glenn School Corporation continues to grow and provide students with a worthwhile activity that moves the spirit and engages the mind. Monica is vice president of the junior board and a honors student. She is actively involved in the Art Gub, Ecology Gub, SADD, junior board, HOPE (Helping Other Peers To Excel) yearbook, Ariel, school newspaper, 4-H club and tennis team.
