for the 1995-96 school year. The corporation teachers have been working under a status quo contract since Aueust 15 while re-

presentatives from the Association and School Board have been meeting to settle the contract dispute. Impasse between the two sides was declared on Sept. 12, and a mediator from the Indiana Educational Employment Relations Board has been assigned to assist in trying to reach a settlement. Major stumbling blocks between the two sides are the salary schedule, insurance benefits, and retirement benefits. The school corporation will receive 400 thousand dollars new money this year, and as of last December had a 1.7 million dollar cash balance. Teachers have indicated the issue is a fair monetary increase based on new money, not based on the large cash balance the corporation has accumulated. Mediation is scheduled for Thursday, October 5, at 6:30 p.m. at the high school. * In order to better identify just how much the teachers of the corporation do to benefit students and to improve their profession, the Association conducted a recent survey of JGEA teachers on several topics. Based on 80 returned surveys from the 108-member teaching staff within the corporation, it is a conservative estimate that corp-oration-wide, the teachers last year spent $25,000 dollars out of their own pockets to purchase prizes, awards, instructional materials, and classroom supplies for students. The survey also discovered that on average, teachers spend an additional 20 to 25 unpaid hours per week attending and assisting with school functions (where attendance is not mandatory, but strongly encouraged), working on committees, attending meetings, and doing general classroom planning. The survey strongly supports the belief that teachers generously volunteer their time and efforts throughout the corporation to create a successful and effective educational atmosphere in the John Glenn schools. Activities which would be severely limited or impossible if not for the dedication of the corporation teachers are activities such as art
