N. L. THIRD GRADERS DIG INTO SCIENCE
Third graders in Mrs. Weiss’s class recently put their muscle power and their brain power to use in their science lesson. The class traveled to the Vandenßossche family’s wildlife preserve, on State Road 23. There, Jamie VandenBossche gave the students a tour of the plant life that abounds and explained the variety of uses of the plants. Students learned that some plants provide food for the animals and birds in the winter; some provide shelter and the milkweed even helps butterflies’ defense! By eating it, the butterfly becomes poisonous to birds. The students came prepared with shovels, newspapers to wrap

the roots and bags in which to carry the plants. Mrs. Vandenßossche assisted the students in digging the plants they chose to take back to the school. After a lot of effort on the part of the students and the volunteer parents, the bus was loaded with plants and taken to the school’s Outdoor Lab. There the students worked at transplanting the many different species they had gathered. “We learned about good bugs and bad bugs, spiders and plants that help birds. We had very, very much fun, too,” said Sam Menefee, Megan Miller and Eric Boeh. Great appreciation goes to Jamie Vandenßossche for providing an

NATURALIST SCHEDULE AT POTATO CREEK STATE PARK The Naturalist schedule for the coming week at Potato Creek State Park, outside of North Liberty, on State Road 4, is as follows: For Saturday, Sept. 30, at 9 a.m. the Park Patch program will be held for ages five and up at the Nature Center. Come on out and find out how to earn a patch while enjoying the park. At 10 a.m. is the Animals Nobody Loves program at the Nature Center auditorium and will last for approximately 45 minutes. Come and find out the good about the bad guys out there. Then at 2 p.m. is the Porte.-Rae Cemetery tour which will be conducted by Jan Shuppert-Arick of the Northern Indiana Historical Society. On Sunday, October 1, at 9 a.m., is the Park Patch Program and at 10 a.m. is the Wilderness Survival hike that will last for about an hour and a half. You are to meet at the Nature Center. Do you know what you can eat and use in the woods? questions will be answered during this hike. At 2 p.m. is the Insect Bingo where you may come and play, win a small prize and learn about local insects at the Nature Center auditorium.
