Thank You Gordon, Sandy, Jason, Brad & Katelyn ENGAGED V '' Mr. and Mrs. Rick Choi asin ski, Niles, Michigan, announce the engagement of their daughter, Sheryl M. Kucharski to David C. Rupel, son of Mrs. Connie Rupel, North Liberty and Mr. Charles Rupel, Vancouver, Washington. Sheryl is a 1989 graduate of La Salle High School and is employed by Hover Trucking. David is a 1987 graduate of John Glenn High School and is employed by Metro Beverage. The couple has chosen a September 14, 1996 wedding date. RECOLLECTIONS.... EVERETT HENRY WALKERTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY Wanamakers had a gravel pit just east of the intersection of State Road 23 and the right-of-way of the old Three “I” Railroad (later the C.E. & S., then the Kankakee division of the New York Central Systems). The rails have since been pulled up. The pit had a hump or wooden bridge over the side tracks; the railroad cars were pulled under it and were loaded by teams pulling gravel wagons to the top then dumping the gravel into the cars below. In addition to his restaurant, do you remember Ed Shirley’s popcorn wagon? It was glass enclosed and lighted. The governor and other parts of the moving machinery were polished up like stainless steel of today. Ed used to set this wagon in front of his restaurant on celebration days and other times when there would be a large crowd in town. He would sit inside dispensing popcorn and candy. I believe the rotating cylinder in which the corn was popped was operated by steam, for I remember steam coming out a vent on top of the wagon. The lights were electric. There used to be quite a rivalry between the two business blocks in Walkerton. The lower block from Michigan Street to Illinois and the upper from Illinois to Indiana were called the Muskrats (lower) and the Tigers (upper). They formed a baseball team from each block and played the best three out of five games for an oyster supper at Gark’s Restaurant, in South Bend.
