Home-School Coordinator Connects With Parents

The John Glenn School Corp, was recognized recently by the Indiana School Boards Association for having an innovative Title One program. The program is in place at Walkerton Elementary School. Walkerton Elementary, where we believe parents are our best partners and can be inspired to learn how to help their children become better learners, has designed a program to promote parent involvement. This is the second year for the program, which is patterned to change generations of thinking regarding education and schools. We have hired a home-school coordinator who is a certified teacher to make the connection with parents, according to Marilyn Lightfoot, principal at WES. This is a full-time position funded by

Title One. One of the functions of the position is to visit homes of students having difficulty. The coordinator oversees an after-school stuy program, which has been in existence for several years and provides five tutors who are assigned 1 to 3 students, Monday thru Thursday, 3-4 p.m. daily. All homework assignments are completed during this time. The results of the after-school study program show growth in attitude and academics, as students have the opportunity to have someone listen to and guide them

in the areas challenging them. Hours are adjusted for employees who serve as tutors. Also this program consists of several components that the homeschool coordinator plans and facilitates. The Elementary purchased the Smart Start videos, which do an excellent job of encouraging parents of the necessity and success of making the home-school connection. A new activity is the “Academic Club,” which replaces the afterschool study on Friday nights and is a time of celebration and learning. This academic challenge time includes games and refreshments. The school is beginning a story and activity time for pre-school children and their parents meeting weekly and topical discussions are planned for parent meetings. The Title One coordinator at WES is Diane Vermillion and the tutors are Barb Strahm, Dianna Payne, Judy Taylor, Theda Casteel and Char Hostetler. For additional information, call 586-3186.
