^E&9rWs**9SK^&^ ■ OF ^ . .J ' NORTH LIBERTY By Gladys Sheneman (Delayed From Last Week) Well here it is Monday evening and time to write a few news items. I can’t believe August is almost over and this weekend will be Labor Day weekend. The summer has really been unusual, first to cold, then to rainy and then way to hot and now we can’t stand to be outside as the mosquitos eat us up. What will we complain about next? Melba Schmuker, of Archbold, Ohio, spent the weekend with Gail and Mae McDaniel. Please remember Daisy Doan who is back in St. Joseph Medical Center after suffering a light heart attack on Saturday evening. She had just returned home from a week stay in the hospital. She would appreciate hearing from her North Liberty friends, I’m sure. Sunday dinner guests of Gladys Sheneman were Martha McCrosky and Thelma Wells. Later Gene and Norma Patrick and granddaughter, Jamie Patrick, came along and took Mrs. Sheneman on a sightseeing trip into Michigan where they visited three campgrounds and saw lots of beautiful campers. and Gladys Sheneman enjoyed dinner on Friday noon, at Al’s Diner, at Koontz Lake and then called on Marian Fouts and the Patrick’s. Just received word that the campground gate at Potato Creek will be attended full time through the holiday and then just on weekends through October. The bicycle and boat rental will be open daily from 7to 7 until Sept. 4. Then from Sept. 5 through Oct. 1, it will be open only on weekends. The beach will be open for the holiday and then close for the season. St. John’s Lutheran Church with pastor Bert Pauluhn will hold the iast service of the summer for the campers on Sept. 3, at Peppermint Hill, at Potato Creek State Park. Thanks to all the churches who participated as the campers really look forward to the Sunday morning worship service and they all are well attended, so I am told. Please remember Willard Burkholder, of Tyner, who is very ill in Memorial Hospital, South Bend. Florence Garwood attended the Michigan City Boat Show, on Friday, with Clarence Dixon, from Chicago. They toured the African Queen which was built in 1912 and was purchased by a retired attorney, James Hendricks, of Louisville, Kentucky, in 1982. This boat was used in the classic movie “African Queen” and it was Kath-
. ryn Hepburn and Humphrey Bogard who starred in that movie. The boat is 30 foot long and weighs five ton and is powered by steam, using 30 pounds of charcoal per hour. Long lines of people were waiting to take a ride on this boat. It was a very crude looking boat compared to all the beautiful boats on display at the marina. This boat has been shown all over the world and it is something to see. Guests of Betty Wharton over the weekend were her daughter, Patty and friend, Lisa Ritter, of Dayton, Ohio. Dorothy Naragon was recently honored on her 80th birthday with a party held at the Fellowship Hall of the Pine Creek Church of the Brethren. Her seven children, Jeanette, from Mishawaka, Joyce, from Zanesville, Ralph, from North Manchester, Virginia, from Oceanside, Calif., Esther, from North Liberty, Dale, from Columbia City and Ken, from Lakeville, along with 13 of her grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and other relatives and life-long friends helped her celebrate and enjoy memories of her life. She was also treated to a horse-drawn carriage ride by Keith Gark. Please remember Gara Mae Kronk who will enter Memorial Hospital, on Tuesday, for surgery as she needs our prayers and get well cards. Charles and Joyce Richmond along with Naoma Prickett, of Willington, Ohio, just returned home on Friday after spending the past ten days vacationing in Kentucky. They visited a museum in Danville; at Bardstown they visited the Old Kentucky Home and then went to the home of Scott and Jill Lucas and daughter, Morgan, in Louisville where they spent most of their time getting better acquainted with their granddaughter, Morgan. On Sunday the Richmond’s attended church at Hollowtown where Charles was pastor for the first six years of preaching and met a lot of friends. How many of you remember the Dixie Cups of ice cream we used to enjoy? They were covered with cardboard lids and when you lifted the lid you could find a picture of your favorite movie star printed on the bottom. Some saved those lids for years. Remember those days? 1 sure do. NOTICE Gladys Sheneman has decided to quit writing the North Liberty News as of September Sth.
