■Third Graders Evaluate Potato Creek Waters W ‘£ ■/w • » • ... tBWMK f ’ictured are Randy Newman and Kerry Smith who are studying fitters in waist-deep water at Potato Creek during a water (valuation of the local creek for a science project at North Liberty Elementary. On Friday, students in Mrs. Amy Weiss’s third grade class did a water evaluation of Potato creek, in the school’s Outdoor Lab. The :lass received their nets and instruction at the west outdoor classroom, then proceeded into the creek for a refreshing look at sience in the real world. The students took nets in the water and caught any and all keeping, crawling or swimming critter they could find. They found many insects, crustaceans and fish in the creek. Non-tolerant stream insects and crustaceans found were caddisflies both in cocoon and out), mayflies, dobsonflies, gilled snails, beetle arva and dragon fly larva. Some of the group of somewhat tolerant organisms found were sowbugs, clams and crawdads. By labeling ypes of species they had netted, the students were able to look up whether the species were pollution tolerant or not. Because they found many non-tolerant or not. Because they found many non-tolerant tpecies, this meant the quality of the water in that area is good. Kerry Smith and John Law, environmental specialists from the St. Joseph bounty SWCD assisted the students in netting, gathering and classifying the insects in the classroom. We appreciated their help to make this activity possible. Additional thanks goes to parents who participated that morning, Donna Beasley, Paul and Diane Annis.
