George Green drowns Monday at Koontz Lake WALKERTON — George E Green, 63, was the victim of a fatal drowning Monday at Koontz Lake. The incident occurred between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. Green was found by his wife, Tina, after she returned home from work. According to the police report, Tina went out toward the lake in an attempt to locate her husband. She found her husband lying on his side with his face in the water. A neighbor then called 911. It is suspected that Green had a heart attack while working on the pier, however, that won’t be confirmed until the coroner’s report is completed. It was incomplete at press time.

Jimtown 40, John Glenn 0 WALKERTON - The visiting Jimmies opened defense of their NSC title, forcing five Falcon turnovers en route to their 28th straight regular-season victory. Senior tailback Nick Medich had a big night in a losing cause for John Glenn, rushing for 143 yards on 23 carries. The Falcons ran for 221 yards and totaled 15 first downs but were unable to reach pay dirt. It was the 30th straight conference win for Jimtown. August 19, the North Liberty VFW post 1954 celebrated their 50th Anniversary of their charter and the 50th Anniversary of World War 11. In spite of the hot weather, a large crowd attended the ceremonies at the Post led by Commander Dick Riley. Color guards from LaPorte VFW, Roseland VFW and American Legion Post 189 from Walkerton presented the colors. Awards and honors were presented after several speeches from dignitaries of the state and district. Rev. Fred Stayton led prayers and Roger Kronk played taps. After the program, a picnic and entertainment was provided by the North Liberty Post. The decorations, under the supervision of Mrs. Marie Kryder, were great and Bob Melton and his crew did a very good job of seeing everyone had plenty to eat.

Highlights from North Miami included the spiking and serving of junior Lindsay O’Connor who contributed 9 kills and 29-33 serving (3 aces, 17 points); freshman Beth Honaker added 9 spike kills and 5 block kills while Heidi Wasteney provided some spark serving going 18-20 (4 aces, 14 points). Defensively the Falcons were led by Angel Dietrich with 22 digs. The junior varsity dropped its season opener to Triton 15-7, 159. Highlights for Glenn included the play of Alissa Fuentes who recorded 5 digs and 1 kill. Lynna Potts was 8-9 serving (5 points) and Jennifer Traub added 1 kill. Youth plays a dominant role this year as the program goes at it with no seniors and only four upperclassmen. Gaining valuable experience with each match, look for the Falcons to make great strides as the season progresses.

Junior Miss Tea Set For Wed., Sept. 6 The Walkerton Junior Miss Committee will hold their annual Tea for prospective contestants and their parents, on Wednesday, Sept. 6, at 7:00 p.m., in the John Glenn High School Library. The Walkerton Junior Miss Scholarship program is open to all Senior girls attending John Glenn, LaVille, or Oregon-Davis High Schools. Walkerton will be hosting their 24th annual program on October 28, in the John Glenn High School Auditorium. Any interested students that cannot attend the Tea or have further questions should contact Sue Louzon, 586-2074; Connie Knowlton, 586-3086 or Nancy Hockett, 936-8425. REINS OF LIFE TO SPONSOR RIDE Reins Os Life’s annual Ride-A-Thon and Fun Walk, will be held on Sunday, Sept. 10, at Potato Creek State Park, North Liberty. The walk will begin at 12 noon and walkers will take separate trails marked for distances up to four miles. The registration tent will be set up in the horse campground area from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Riders must provide their own horses. Businesses and individuals are asked to form teams and join the walk. Walkers and riders must turn in their pledges on the dday of the event in order to be eligible for prizes. For more information call Sharon at 232-0853. CHRISTIAN WOMEN TO MEET The Marshall County Christian Women’s Club will meet on Wednesday, September 6, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Balloon Wurks Restaurant, at the Plymouth Holiday Inn. Cost of the luncheon meeting is $5.75 inclusive. Theme for the day is “Confectionery Delight” with a special feature to be presented by Cathy Anderson, from Olympia Candy Kitchens and guest speaker, Joyce Stephens, an RN who enjoys needlepoint and writing, from Seymour, Tenn.
