College Football Hall Os Fame To Open In S. Bend The end of August traditionally marks the opening of college football season. This year college football fans, celebrities and dignitaries from across the country will also kick off the opening of the new College Football Hall of Fame in South Bend, Indiana. And once the doors are opened, every day at the Hall will be a crisp, clear autumn game day. The City of South Bend and the national Football Foundation will open the doors of the sl4 million facility with a Grand Opening Festival August 24 through 27. Parades, pep rallies and a two-day Untimate Tailgate Party are just some of the special events planned for the festival. ESPN II will provide live coverage of the festivities, including dedication and induction ceremonies for the Hall of Fame class of 1995. Football greats among the class of ’95 and participating in the : Grand Opening Festival include j Jim Martin, Notre Dame end/ ( tackle and co-captain of the 1949 j National Championship team; Jim . Brown, Syracuse running back; , Chris Burford, Stanford end; Tommy Casanova, Louisiana State defensive back; Jake Gibbs, Mississippi quarterback; Rick Glover, Nebraska tackle/guard; James Grabowski, Illinois fullback; Dennis Onkontz, Penn State linebacker; Rick Redman, Washington guard/linebacker; Billy Sims, Oklahoma running back; and Mike Singletary, Baylor linebacker; and the 1995 coach inductee, Frank Kush, Arizona State. Paul Robeson, Rutgers end, will also be inducted post humously during the ceremonies. His son, Paul Robeson, Jr. will be on hand to receive his father’s honors. The world-class sports shrine is strategically located in the center of the business and entertainment district of downtown South Bend. The Hall is linked through an underground concourse to Century Center, the city’s award-winning convention center. The concourse features attractive displays giving visitors a preview of what awaits them at the Hall of Fame. The direct linkage provides the new hall with easy access to expanded banquet and event facilities which can meet the needs of the largest convention or special groups of visitors. Meeting planners and business groups have already shown keen interest in the Hall. In addition to the link to the convention center, the new Hall is home of the Press Box, a meeting and banquet room overlooking the Hall’s main lobby and the 4-story theme schlpture “Pursuit of a Dream.” The Press Box provides a unique atmosphere for formal dinners or more casual functions. Alumni groups planning to attend their school’s matchup against Notre Dame have also shown interest in using the Hall’s facilities. Texas fans will use the Hall as their rallying spot for their September 23 matchup against the Fighting Irish. Combining football nostalgia since the game’s beginning in 1896 with innovative interactive exhibits, the new 58,000 square foot Hall promises to be one of the premiere sports museums in exist(continued on Page 12)

Liberty VFW To Celebrate 50th Anniversary On August 19, the North Liberty V.F.W. Post 1954 will be celebrating their 50th anniversary of their charter and the fifieth anniversary of World War 11. Beginning at 12 noon, there will be color guards and representatives from V.F.W. Posts and American Legion Posts from all over the area. To name a few color guards taking part in a parade that will occur, will be District 3 Roseland V.F.W. Post 624, District 4 Decatur Post 6236 and Walkerton American Legion Post 189 S.A.L. There will be activities for everyone and food to enjoy. We would like to see all comrades and sisters come and see your post. Lets try to make this the biggest celebration ever. JG Falcons To Play In Jamboree The John Glenn High School varsity football team will travel to Bremen this Friday night to participate in the Bremen Jamboree, action begins at 7:30 p.m. with Bremen and Glenn playing in the first quarter followed by Triton and La Ville in the second quarter. Third quarter action has Bremen facing LaVille and the final quarter of play matches Triton and Glenn. Tickets are available at John Glenn High School for $3.00. FAN BUS TO JAMBOREE The fan bus to the Bremen Jamboree will leave North Liberty (United Methodist Church parking lot) at 6:15 p.m. and John Glenn High School at 6:30 p.m. Adults and students are welcome to ride. World War IIF” Exhibit Here Until Sept. 4 The four-year commemorative period of World War II will conclude in 1995. Many individuals, clubs, organizations, towns, cities and the entire nation, have planned and executed their thoughts and appreciation for those who served their country, some never to return, others, still missing in action (MIAs). The Walkerton Historical Society will again exhibit loaned items of the time fram of “V-J Day.” This display may be viewed in the window of Richard Parker, CPA, whose office is in the Officenter, 612 Roosevelt Road. Some of the items to be shown are: Stars & Stripes 1945 publication “VICTORY”; Japanese flag and money; pictures of Tokyo Rose, Leyte Island, Philippine invasion, New Guinea; display case of various Australia, New Guinea and Japanese items; Japanese helmet, swords, gas mask and many not catalogued to date. The public may view these artifacts at their leisure, August 15, V-J Day, until September 4. September 2 being the 50th anniversary of the official closing of World War 11. NOTICE The Oregon-Davis Township Senior Citzens will have their dinner catered in and meeting on Thursday, August 17, at St. Dominic Church Hall, on State Road 23 south of Koontz Lake, at 12:00 noon. Come and enjoy a social get-together, play cards and visit. Bring a friend. COMMUNITY PICNIC The Teegarden Community carry-in picnic will be held at the Teegarden Park, on Saturday, August 19 at 12:00 noon. Beverages will be provided by the Teegarden Brethren Church. J G Schools To Open On Tues., Aug. 22 Students in grades 1- 12 in the John Glenn School Corporation will attend their first day of classes Tuesday, August 22. Times are as follows: John Glenn High School — 7:59 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. dismissal. North Liberty Elementary School — 8:10 a.m. - 2:45 p.m. dismissal, (elementary students who walk home are dismissed at 2:45 p.m.) Urey Middle School — 7:55 a.m. - 2:55 p.m. dismissal. Walkerton Elementary School — 8:00 a.m. - 2:45 p.m. dismissal, (elementary students who walk home are dismissed at 2:45 p.m.) Lunches will cost SI.OO per day for grades one through six and $1.25 per day for grades seven through twelve. Breakfast, which is served at Walkerton Elementary School and North Liberty Elementary School, will cost 55 cents. Students attending John Glenn High School, North Liberty Elementary School, Urey Middle School and Walkerton Elementary School shall register on the following days: Wednesday, August 16, 12:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, August 17, 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Students enrolling in kindergarten must be five years of age on or before June 1 and must submit a legal birth certificate and a completed physical form when registering. Arrangements must be made at Walkerton Elementary School or North Liberty Elementary School for pre-screening of kindergarten students. Kindergarten classes start Monday, August 28. Students new to the John Glenn School Corporation should contact the guidance department in each school to schedule registration appointments during the week of August 14 - 18. All incoming kindergarten students and students new to the Corporation must have inoculations up to date and new students in grades K-6 must have a physical on file before being admitted to school. Parents should be prepared to pay textbook rental and fee costs upon registration. JG Fall Sports Season Tickets To Go On Sale John Glenn High School has announced its all-sports pass, season ticket, and single game ticket prices for the 1995-96 athletic seasons. The all-sports pass for adults is $35.00 and $25.00 for students. Varsity football season tickets are priced at SIO.OO for adults and $6.00 for students. Volleyball season tickets are priced at $12.00 for adults and students. The all-sports passes and season tickets are available at John Glenn High School. They will also be available at the first home volleyball game on August 24 and the first home football game on August 25. Single game ticket prices for varsity football are $3.00 for both students and adults. Single game tickets for junior varsity football and volleyball are $2.00 for both students and adults. There will be no admission charge for cross country and boys tennis. Tickets for the winter sports are priced as follows: Boys varsity basketball and girls varsity basketball season tickets are SIB.OO for adults and $12.00 for students. Single game tickets for boys basketball and girls basketball are $3.00 for both students and adults. Single game tickets for freshman basketball and wrestling are $2.00 for both students and adults. Tickets for the spring sports are priced as follows: Varsity baseball season tickets are priced at $15.00 for students and adults. Boys and girls track season tickets are $5.00 for both students and adults. Single game tickets for varsity baseball and track are $2.00 for both adults and students. There will be no admission charge for golf, girls tennis, and junior varsity baseball. Senior citizens residing in the John Glenn School Corporation are eligible for a complimentary allsports pass to all home athletic events except tournaments. To , qualify, persons must be 65 years of age or older and they must receive their ticket in person at the John Glenn High School Office.
