■Construction 4At John Glenn ■n Full Swing Th e consturction project at John ’ Glenn High School which will ‘ upgrade the outdoor physical edus cation and athletic facilities is beginning to take shape. The first r phase of the project required the j removal of the old fencing, scorer * board and lighting system from the j football field. The tennis courts have also had the fencing removed and the baseball field will have the . fencing and dugouts removed very soon. The second phase of the project is the construction phase. The new eight lane all weather track is almost completely graded and the gravel sub-base should be put down in the next few days. The asphalt for the track should be applied the last week of July. The foundation for the new press box/restroom/concession building was poured last week and construction of the three story building is on schedule. The electric lines to the new football lighting system and new scoreboard and football * delay of game clocks are underground systems which are in place and ready to be connected. The new lighting system will be delivered within the week and the transformer to power the system should arrive by the first week of August. The sewage and water lines have also been trenched and are in place ready for the plumbing to be connected. The eight new tennis courts and new baseball field have been I staked out and grading for those facilities has been started. The foundations for the new maintenance/storage building, baseball dugouts, and baseball press box/ storage building should be beginning very soon as well. The fencing for the complex is also scheduled to be erected within the next few weeks. The construction project at John Glenn High School to upgrade the outdoor physical education and athletic facilities is on schedule. The facility will be completed this fall with the primary emphasis currently being placed on the football area, making sure it is ready for the season opener on August 25th. FINAL SUMMER MOVIE AT THE LIBRARY One last chance to join the Summer Movie Fun at the Walkerton Library. This week, on Friday, July 21st, the library will be showing The Selfish Giant and also * Dr. Seuss On The Loose. The Selfish Giant is Oscar Wilde’s story of a greedy giant who I would not share his beautiful garden with anyone. Since he i would not let the children in, they decided to move in . . . permanently! 1 Dr. Seuss On The Loose features three of the Dr.’s best stories — The Sneetches, The Lorax and Green Eggs and Ham. ' The movie begins at 2:00 and will last 60 minutes. Everyone is welcome, but please, no children under age six without an adult. I OREGON-DAVIS SENIORS TO MEET JULY 20 i The Oregon-Davis Township Senior Citizens will meet and have lunch at Tai Pan Restaurant at 1:00 p.m., Plymouth, Thursday, July r 20th. CLASS OF 1960 35TH REUNION JULY 29 The Gass of 1960 of Walkerton High School is holding their 35th reunion on Saturday, July 29, at the Holiday Inn, 444 Pine Lake Ave., LaPorte, from 6:00 p.m. until closing. A get-together is planned for Friday night, July 28th, at Roskoe’s, Pine Lake Avenue, LaPorte, for a cruise around the lake. LAST CRAFT TIME THIS SUMMER The last Craft Time of 1995 is already here. This week children will learn to make their own paper. Anyone entering grades one thru six is welcome to join the fun. Registration begins July 19th and runs through July 25th. Craft Time is July 26th from 11:00 to 12:00. There are only ten places in the class so register early! For more information, call the Walkerton Library at 586-2933. Miller’s To Host Community Flea Market July 21 Miller’s Merry Manor at Walkerton will be holding a community flea market on the lawn and parking area. Donations for our worthy causes are greatly appreciated. COMMUNITY CHURCHES CHILD CARE HAS SUMMER OPENINGS The Community Churches Child Care (North Liberty School Latchkey Program) has summer openings available for children age kindergarten - 6th grade, from 6:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. weekdays. Robert E. Urbin Editor Passes Away On July 12 . - ja§! Robert E. Urbin, 62, of 603 Vi Roosevelt Road, Walkerton, passed away at 4:23 p.m., on Wednesday, July 12, in St. Joseph Hospital of Marshall County, Plymouth. He was bom on December 21, 1932, in Kewanna, to Harry Vera and Bertha L. Urbin. His father passed away in 1935 and in July of 1941 with his mother, who passed away in December of 1993 and his sister, Virginia, who survives moved to Walkerton. He was a 1950 graduate of Walkerton High School. On October 17, 1964, in Walkerton, he married Susan R. Burch, who survives. Mr. Urbin began purchasing the Independent-News in February of 1957 along with Neil W. De Coudres, of North Liberty, from Charles M. Finch, of Walkerton and Gem DeCoudres, of North Liberty. Mr. Urbin started working at the Independent-News Co. while in high school, working evenings and Saturdays until he graduated when he became a full-time eraWALKERTON METHODIST CHURCH SPONSORING BASKETBALL TOURNEY The Walkerton United Methodist Church is sponsoring a 3 on 3 basketball tourney on Saturday, July 29, at 9:00 a.m. at Place Park Urey. This will be a double elimination tournament with four players on a team and each team being guaranteed at least two games. All games will be half court games lasting 35 minutes (two 15 minute halves with a five minute half time) with an official score keeper to keep track of points. A drink will be furnished for all players at half court. The winning team will get free T-shirts. Guys or girls, adults or youth (4th grade and up) may form a team but ages must be computable for playing. The entry fee for playing is SI.OO per player and should be paid by Wednesday, July 26th which is the last day to sign up so that the tourney grid can be prepared and you can be notified of your time to play. In August of 1959 Mr. Urbin bought out the interest of Neil DeCoudres and became sole owner and operator of the Inde-pendent-News Co., Inc., publisher of your local newspaper, "The Independent-News. ’ ’ Mr. Urbin held several offices as well as president of the Walkerton Chamber of Commerce, Walkerton Lions Gub and the Plymouth Country Gub. He also served for six years on the Indiana Lions Cancer Control Board and the Walkerton Salvation Army Committee for many years. He was a member of the Walkerton United Methodist Church where he served as a Sunday School teacher and sang in the choir. He was an avid Detroit Tiger fan and loved all sports, especially baseball, softball and golf. While in high school he was on the varsity basketball, baseball and track teams. For many years he served as the official scorer for Walkerton and John Glenn High Schools basketball and football teams. He was a licensed IHSAA baseball official. He and his wife were former publishers of the Culver Citizen in the mid 70’s. Survivors include his sister, Virginia Guttman, of Wakarusa; one nephew; two nieces; his wife; several cousins and a close friend Shirley Hazel, of Walkerton. He was preceded in death by a niece, Amy Guttman. Services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 15, at the Walkerton United Methoist Church, with Dr. Donald C. Lacy, pastor, officiating. Burial was in the 1.0.0. F. Cemetery, Kewanna. The Nusbaum-Elkin Funeral Home, Walkerton, was in charge of the arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the National Kidney Foundation.

New Theme Choosen For ’96 Parade The North Liberty 4th of July Committee has decided on a theme for the 4th of July parade in 1996. The theme will be "Music, Music, Music.” A few ideas to keep in mind are as follows: Roaring 20’s, 50’s and 60’s, Rock and Roll, Big Band Era, Barber Shop Quartet, Disco, Country Hoe Down and Musicals (Oklahoma). So in less than a year the 1996 parade will be upon us. Get your thinking caps on a decorate a float about "Music, Music, Music.” American Legion Auxiliary 189 Receives Honors Orville Easterday Unit 189, American Legion Auxiliary, Walkerton, received several honors recently as reported by the Unit president, Alice Flaugher. Attending the third district meeting in New Carlisle, it was announced the following awards to the Unit: Judy Gravenor, Chaplain of the Unit, 2nd place in her Book of Prayers; Marthe Malstaff, high honors for writing a Unit history and her photo history was sent to the Department for judging; and a 2nd for Amybelle Wardman for her publicity book. Also recently, other awards to members at a district meeting were made to the following: membership pin to Maxine Schmeltz for reaching membership goal; Elaine Williams received a first rating for the hat created with poppies, this being sent to Department for judging at the Department Convention; Alice Flaugher, a first for poppy corsage which also will be judged at Department Convention; Alice Flaugher, 3rd for her poppy centerpiece; Amybelle Wardman, first for poppy wall-hanging piece which will be judged at Department convention and Elaine Williams, 2nd for a poppy wall-hanging piece. At the Third District meeting in New Carlisle, election of district officers was held with Alice Flagher of Walkerton being elected Vice-president of Third District. Mrs. Flaugher will be attending the convention of the Indiana Department, American Legion Auxiliary at Indianapolis, July 14 • 16 as a delegate from Walkerton. Extension Homemakers Pie Day At Fair The 2nd annual "Pie Day” at the 4-H Fair is being sponsored by the St. Joseph County Extension Homemakers. This contest is open to all St. Joseph County residents, regardless of age or gender. Just make a homemade pie in a disposable pan. No cream or refrigerated pies I Deliver pies to the Commercial Building on the St. Joseph County 4-H Fairgrounds located on the corner of Jackson and Ironwood Roads. Entries will be accepted between 5:00 and 6:00 p.m. on August 1. Pies will be judged on appearance and taste. Grand champion and runner-up prizes will be given.
