You And Your Pet Dear Dr. Wlaei Is it really necessary for my cats to have rabies vaccinations? A friend told me that there is a new state law requiring the vaccinations, yet I haven’t heard of a rabies case for a long time. Answers Your friend is right. Governor Bayh just signed the new rule requiring rabies vaccinations for all cats in Indiana and imposing up to a $25,000 fine for owners who do not inoculate their cats. We are the 33rd state with such a law. There are good reasons for the new requirement. Indiana is threatened from increased rabies cases in raccoons from the East and skunks from the West. People can be treated for the disease if it is diagnosed early. Vaccinations are the only protection for animals. Rabies can infect almost any warm blooded animal. It is shed in the saliva and transmitted by the bite of an infected animal. The disease attacks nerves, the spinal cord, brain and other tissues such as the salivary glands. Symptoms of the disease develop 2 - 8 weeks after the bite. The infected animal can transmit the disease within ten days after symptoms develop. Initially the disease may go unnoticed since symptoms are subtle. They include fever, behavior change, decreased eye reflexes and chewing on the bite area. As the disease progresses, the animal may show unusual behavior such as barking, restlessness, aggression, roaming, disorientation and seizures. Eventually the victim becomes weak and paralyzed and falls into a coma. Death occurs 3 -7 days after signs of disease appear. Cats and dogs should be vaccinated when 12 weeks old and revaccinated every year thereafter. (Never vaccinate a wild animal.)

Report all bite wounds from pets or wild animals to local health officials. A bitten pet that has been vaccinated should be revaccinated and quarantined for 90 days. It is best to euthanize any bitten animal that has not been vaccinated — or at lease isolate it from animals and people for six months. A post mortem is the only way to tell if such an animal is infected. A healthy pet that has bitten a person should be isolated for at least ten days. If you have a question about your pet, write Dr. Wise, Indiana Veterinary Medial Association, 3802
