INDIANA ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGE COMMISSION By Patricia A. Hebenstreit, Executive Director Kevin J. Schaefer, Chairman POSTMASTER’S ‘‘POSTMARKS’’ By Linda Johnson Walkerton Postmaster Mailbox Improvement Week Mailbox Improvement Week, a traditional annual observance that contributes to the appearance of the countryside and streets in suburban areas, is being held July 10-15 according to Walkerton Postmaster Linda Johnson. "Mailbox Improvement Week has long served as the starting signal for special community efforts to repair, repaint, and make other improvements in the security and appearance of suburban and rural mailboxes," Johnson explained. "And this gives our community another opportunity to promote the security of mail by repairing mailboxes damaged by the weather during the last year". Mailboxes in good condition contribute to a more efficient delivery and collection operation and improve service to an entire route, according to the postmaster. Customers must use only approved traditional or contemporary curbside mailboxes for new installations or replacements, according to Postmaster Johnson, but cus-

tomers may use a custom-built mailbox if they get local approval to make sure it conforms to guidelines applying to flag, size, strength and quality of construction. LEGION CORNER By William Flaugher American Legion Post 189 Editor’s note: This is a response from Congressman Tim Roemer to William Flaugher.) Dear Mr. Flaugher, Knowing of your interest in Medicare reimbursement for eligible military retirees and their families, I am pleased to inform you that I hav co-sponsored Rep. Joel Mefley’s bill, H.R. 580. Simply put, this legislation allows military retiriees to use their Medicare benefits at military hospitals. As you know, budget cuts have forced some military hospitals to £ deny health care to treat Medi-care-eligible retirees. In particular, retirees who fought in World War 11, Korea and Vietnam are especially hard hit. Not only are they being denied "space available” care in military treatment facilities, many Medicare-eligible retirees who expressed a strong interest in joining Tricare Prime are being locked out. Some retirees use military treatment facilities over private providers, but in doing so lose the Medicare benefit they are paying for. Other retirees want to use these facilites but cannot afford to, because they rely on their Medicare to pay health care expenses. I believe H.R. 580 is good policy and will provide retirees with the choice to use military treatment facilities. At the same time, Medicare would be paying less money to these facilities than it would in the private sector. You can be assured that I will continue to work with my colleagues in the House of Representatives to ensure passage of H.R. 580 and will give my full support to all deserving legislation affecting veterans when such bills are considered by Congress. I sincerely hope that this information is useful and look forward to working with the veterans of Indiana’s Third Congressional District to assist those who have defended and protected our Nation. Sincerely,
