John Payne, a 6’4” senior from Oregon-Davis High School, has announced his decision to play basketball at Bethel College next year. Payne averaged 16 points per game and 10 rebounds for the Bobcats who were the Bi-County champions. He was a four sport

varsity letter winner and his team’s most valuable player while receiving all Bi-County and all Sectional honors. In the South Bend Tribune’s year end statistics, John was in the top ten in every category and was number one in blocked shots per game.

Payne also excels in academics and was salutatorian of his senior class. “John will continue to improve and his best years of basketball are still ahead of him,’’ states Bethel coach Mike Lightfoot. “He is an outstanding person and student. We are happy to have John in our program.” Although heavily recruited out of state, Payne chose Bethel College. “Bethel has an outsanding tradition, and I feel I would like to stay closer to home and family and attend a solid Christian School,” stated Payne. Walkerton Jr. Firemen Stampede The Walkerton Volunteer Fire Department will sponsor a Walkerton Jr. Fireman Stampede to be held Sunday, Juley 2, at 12:00 noon in Place Park. There will be three age groups, 5-7; 8-10 and 11-12. There will be four events for four member teams. Each event will be timed, best overall time wins. First, second and third places will be awarded. The events will be judged by firemen. Teams must fill out entry forms and return to Perry McMichael, 1424 Ohio St., Walkerton, 46574 by June 28, 1995. This Week At The Walkerton Public Library It might be hot outside, but if you come to the Library you can see snow. At least you can see the snow and cold in the movie, “Scamper The Penguin”. Scamper is a young penguin who loves trouble. It starts from the minute he hatches and continues. He and his friend Snowflake are captured by trappers and help prisoner aboard a ship headed towards a big city zoo. Scamper The Penguin will be shown at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 30th and is 85 minutes long. Everyone is welcome but children under age six should come with an adult. Festival Lists Dress-A-Doll Contest Rules The annual Potato Creek Festival Doll contest is here again! Stop by the North Libertry Branch Library to select a doll to dress. Categories include: bridal, patriotic, Potato Creek Days, storybook and general. Dolls must be returned by August 1. Prizes to be awarded in all categories. Local Resident To Celebrate 100th Birthday Myrtle Mae Eddinger, of Miller’s Merry Manor, Walkerton, will celebrate her 100th birthday July 5. She was married to Raymond B. Eddinger, who preceded her in death December 25, 1976. Both were residents of Cogan Station, Pennsylvania, until Myrtle moved to Indiana in 1983, where she made her home with her son and daughter-in-law, Harold and Evelyn Eddinger, 808 Virginia Street. Joining Myrtle in celebration are her daughter, Dorothy and Gair Delker, of Montoursville, Pennsylvania; Gyde and Alice Eddinger, Allenwood, Pennsylvania; Harold and Evelyn Eddinger, of Walkerton.
